Thank you all for the warm welcome! Sadly i will miss the florida meet due to it being on a holiday weekend (cant get off work)
:samir - I'm actually a little outside orlando in the four corners area near disney but putting all that in the location line would be overkill so orlando was close enough ![]() :richee - thanks it gets totally pampered i wash it every night after work cause I hate the look of a dirty black car. my mechanic and I are already planning the 5sfte route but first things will be the sound sytem and leather interior upgrades at first i was thinking of just putting a regular sound system and making room to dash install a gps however i have decided i am going to install a car pc http://www.revo-sys.com/Double_DIN_VGA_Tou...PC_Monitors.php for the indash double din screen and from there i will build a lower power always on desktop into the dash (low power sleep for the win 1 to 3 watts ) i was thinking just using win 7's media center customized for my front end with garmin pc installed for navigation, when i am ready to start my mods i will start a thread. as for the interior leather upgrade i really fell in love with the look of another members ride and will be mimicing hers although a cheaper route using painted pieces for the dash panels and leather for the seats but the color scheme is just sexy http://content.foto.mail.ru/mail/toycelica/1/i-474.jpg kudos to LED-BOY that is one sexy interior. -------------------- ![]() |

bro i did the carPC thing too. best choice ever. which monitor did you go with, i'm leaning toward the revo cause it claims to be sunlight readable and includes the software controlled stereo and 4 channel amp but i'm not married to it yet, what are using for front end software.... hehe we gots lots to talk about it will be my first carpc but have been looking to do it for awhile but my prev ride was a sable with the oval of death non removable radio cause of the hvac controls were integrated to the front end controller of the radio but now that i have a double din opening its game on once the cash is there to put out for the monitor. the pc itself will either be my netbook (msi u210) or i will build an intel atom / nvidia ion desktop into the dash -------------------- ![]() |

i went with a lilliput 7in touch panel. its not the best in direct sunlight but it uses ~2.5 watts if u get the LED backlit one. Fits perfectly in the radio hole with a bit of dremel work.
http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=57327 My setup is not the BEST, but it works reliably. My project car will have a much better designed carPC and i will post up the progression in my swap progress thread in my sig. i have an 800w inverter attatched to my sub box, along with an 800w 4ch amp for the mids and a 1200w monoblock for my 15". the inverter powers my dual core athlon 64 x2 desktop board, 512 megs ram (faster hibernation) and a 120GB HDD, wireless card. i have XP pro (got it free from work) and currently use no frontend. use winamp for music/videos and delorme street atlas & gps for navigation. i built the machine in the passenger quarter panel behind the rear speaker. the PC uses about 10a while playing music. 1 or so in standby. (@12v) im leaning towards an miniITX board with an AMD sempron single core, same screen, same ram, maybe a SSD for my 2nd carPC (which will be my 5th carPC build) thinking of going with win7 since i like its mediacenter, but ill need more ram so slower hibernation. im expecting this build to use about 3-4 amps while in use, .25-.5 in standby. (all 12v amperes) -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. if you build a dual atom with ion you will have the power for flash and the sleep wattage of only 5w so you never have to hibernate, also you can set win 7 to wake from touching the screen >5 seconds to wake from sleep, hell the low power consumption of a dual atom is so low you can just leave the computer on over night and your battery will still start the car. total system wattage using an ssd will be under 40w in use 18w standby 5w sleep. main reason for building a carpc for me is i deliver pizza so i want to run excel to fill out my tip sheets without having to remember to bring my laptop. excel is also great for my mileage report and tracking vehicle expenses.
you need to lose the inverter powering the pc and run a dc to dc power supply, waaaaaaayyyy more efficient i've seen them as high as 200w so as long as your not running a gaming rig in your car it should be more then enough for your pc. my atom build will have a 60w dc to dc power supply. also most dc to dc power supplies have intelligent power sense and will shut down the pc to prevent deep discharge at a certain voltage you set it for. -------------------- ![]() |

the single sempron will use about the same power, but will be faster for most tasks as it is a higher core clock as the atom, even though it is a single core. i only use the inverter as it is what i had avail at the time of build and its nice to have ac for other purposes. i found an SSD that uses LESS THAN ONE WATT under load. so im going that route. notice i didn't mention how i'd power my 2nd rig
![]() anyhow, the three biggest concerns/problems for the Celica carPC is where to install the system, heat, and vibrations effect on the HDD (not an issue now since we're going SSD next) -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. heat is why i suggested the atom... the atom will run a fanless sync up to 140f hottest my interior has been is 115 howerver i suspect i will hit 125 during later summer months. sure its not the fatest in the world but its a resilliant chip that shines in working where other chips fail.
as for as location it appears theres enough room inside the console behind the climate controls for a conservative mini itx box. carmp3.com has been awesome for ionformation and they have a great store for buying most of what you need -------------------- ![]() |
