So I took out my air filter to clean it and as I looked underneath right behind my transmission, I saw a whole bunch of grease or oil splattered all over. It looked like something had exploded and got over everywhere. I check the other (passenger) side as well and it looks like the grease got all over the other axle as well. Here are some pics of where the grease is:

They're not great pics, but I just thought it might give you an idea. I checked my transmission and it's not leaking. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I know that something must be wrong. If anyone can help me and tell me where the grease/oil might be coming from I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

on the 3rd picture you can clearly see the issue, your CV joint boot is broken, so the splatter of grease you see is the grease that was contained in it that flew everywhere as uyou drive.

The grease is also on both sides, does this mean that both boots are broken? Also, how much damage would this do to my wallet to get it fixed? Is it an easy fix as well? I know a lot of mechanical stuff, but axles and cv joints are not my thing.

cv boots arent expensive or time consuming to replace, depending on if its the inner or outter... the outers cost about $30 a piece.. if its the inner, its easier to replace the whole axle, which runs about $90

Thanks a lot guys! One last question, well of course original Toyota parts would be the best replacement. But would you guys recommend any other place to get the parts to save some money?

the prices i gave you were an average of advanced auto and autozone... if its just the boot that u need, it really doesnt matter if its an original toyota part.... axle, wouldn't hurt to be original, but i have replaced one of mine with one from advanced auto and havent had any problems... in this case, toyota parts vs non-toyota really just means how much money u want to spend, toyota being the more expensive one (especially if you have to order from a dealer)

Buy the WHOLE axle from RockAuto.com - get the Cardone A1 axles because they're beefier than the Toyota ones; you can get both shipped for about 160 dollars.

Make sure you use retailmenot.com to get a 5% coupon to use at RockAuto.

I bought axles for both my Celicas from Carquest. When I bought them for the 99 last week it was $115 including tax for both sides together, but they were remanufactured (and I had to return the old ones). New ones were $85 each if I remember correctly.
