The ads prompt that Castrol Edge provides 8 times better protection wear than Mobil 1. I use Mobil 1 lol. So I was wondering if Castrol Edge is legit, they sure have charts and scientific proof that it's better than Mobil 1, I wanna know what the 6gc members think though. Thanks guys!

a more appropiate way to approach this is, how confortable do you feel about changing your oil at 10,000 miles ?

if you are a conservative who doesn't feel confortable past the 3,000 miles interval, then paying the extra money for castrol edge is not worthy. In reality, paying for ANY syntechtic oil and replacing it after 3,000 miles is a waste of money, but I do just that lol.

for turbo cars people will always recommend syntechtic oils for the plain fact that they can withstand higher temperatures before they stop protecting your engine, but syntechtic or not, if your engine is getting that hot, sooner or later the damage will be done, so the true advantage of using syntechtic is that it'll last longer so the oil replacing internals can be extended, but is a perssonal choice as to replace it at 3000 or not, from what I've seen most people who use syntechtic replace their oil around 3-4 K miles anyways and I'm guilty of that as well.

I'm like you as well. I like to change my oil between 3k and 5k. I pay about $7/quart for the Mobil 1 10w30 that I use, I have no idea on how the pricing of Edge is though. I just wanted to know if it was THAT much better, ya know?

from what ive seen the castrol edge is significantly more expensive per quart. i purchase mobil 1 in the 5 qt jug at walmart, its around $23 and the edge 5qt ive seen at ~$30.

what this comes down to is a bad comparison. Mobil 1 does not guarantee or recommend extended drain intervals. EDGE seems to be guarantee-ing a 1yr or 15,000mi warranty. Seems to me they are competing with other extended drain companies like ams oil, neo, and redline.

OH btw. i run my Mobil 1 for 7-8k intervals and ive had no problem, the oil can probably take more but i think that is reasonable.

So what you guys are saying is that Edge, while good, is a superfluous expense when Mobil 1 works just fine?

not to rain on that idea but i did some testing once mobil 1 vs castrol syntec vs royal purple. mobil 1 and the syntec were almost exactly the same (temperature and hp/torque #) but the royal purple had the same hp/torque numbers but the engine was closer to knocking in the higher rpm's (idk why in particular but all measurements were being monitored by volt/amp meters) AND it ran like 5-10 degrees Hotter. all tests were done w/a control and over evenly spaced timing to allow for cool down. (granted it was also done ~2years ago so they might have changed their formula?
-just my $.02

I only use synthetics oils simply because it just makes more sense. Considering you drive a car for 100k miles every 7 years (average American driving habits) and you change your oil every 3k miles. You will only change the oil 33 times. On average it cost 10 dollars more for synthetic vs normal oil so your spending $350 more on oil. For $350 over the coarse of 7 years your getting better wear protection, better gas mileage, extra protection from forgotten oil changes, meanwhile scrubbing the inside of your engine clean.

I never understood why people try to save $350 on a $20000 car....

honestly i HATE castrol.

i ran castrol gtx for over a year with the same results got dirty real fast like at the 1000 mile mark.

switched too Pennzoil and now it stays clean up too about the 25-3000 mark.

personally tho if i built up my own motor i would use royal purple ignoring the price... people online deem it the best so wink.gif
