I have a 97 Celica GT 2.2 li and these cars are not gas saver at all. The gas drop like everything time you step on the gas pedal..what can be done? I am starting to hate driving it cause i can't afford gas no more it it takes $40.00+ to fill it up. I travel 30 miles to work everyday and I almost have to gas twice a week. Sometimes I wish i could have bought a Honda Civic. I mean seriously this car ain't that fast but it uses so many gas compare to Acuras and Hondas..Maybe thinking about selling my car now, but i will hate to see it go.

My old GT was getting over 30 mpg and never got under 25. Must be the driving style. I'm not saying you drive like a tool. I am saying that I drove like a grandpa. You openly admit that the car is not fast, so why try to drive it fast?

Sell the car and do yourself a favor. If you can't get more than 25 mpg out of this car, then you need another car...maybe a diesel VW or a hybrid like the Civic. Seriously. I can easily get at least 33 mpg in my GT and over 38 mpg in my ST. No point in driving a car you hate.

i drive 75-80 mph on the freeway and plus i have a aftermarket header and 4" intake short ram. I don't know if these mods are making my gas go down. And of course i truly love my celica bodystyle itself just not the gas. I don't calculate my mpg but all I know is that i will need to gas it once a week at full tank. This is my 3rd 6gc and don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of the 6gc and so is my family.

haha even stomping it you should get 10 litres per 100km which I get even in my mums hyundai getz when I drive it hard, do your spark plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor and you will see results wink.gif.

stop mashing the gas at every single chance and drive at 70 or 65 and you will see results, if you drive it like you stole it then yeah your gonna get horrible gas mileage in anything that you drive, drive like a normal person and not a pissed off teenager and you will be fine, if not sell it and buy something you like to drive but your gonna have the same problem

fuel economy drops over 65mph. do you really have to drive 75-80mph on the freeway?

Do a tuneup on the car too, new spark plugs and such, and check your tire pressure. I drive 75-80 MPH on the highway, shift at 4k RPM almost every shift, and have a bad alignment and still get between 28 and 30 mpg with my GT. I'm guessing you have some sort of mechanical issue that's causing the poor mileage.

How's your alignment? A bad alignment could make your gas mileage suffer too, even if the car "seems to drive straight."

90% of your problem comes from your subconsciousness telling you that you might have a problem. Celica should give you 400 miles to a full tank driving on a highway. Anything below that implies that you have been either a baaaad boy driving your car hard and shifting at 8000rpm. It could also mean that you have been avoiding car maintenance like making sure that your wheels are aligned and that you have changed your spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter, making sure you have no exhaust leaks and that your headers and intake were connected properly.

You say that you drive 60 mi every day 5 times per week. Do the math. That's already 300 miles right there. You are also probably stuck in traffic so thats another 40 miles worth of driving lost there. So now you are also in middle of winter/summer so you have to heat the car or use air conditioning so you are losing another 10 miles there.. thats 350 miles to a tank. Consider your weekend trips or evening outings and thats another 20 miles.

Either way the only feasible way for your celica to give you less than 350 miles to a tank is if you drive it hard or you have mechanical issues.

Now you say.. that you have to fill up twice driving 300 miles? You DEFINITELY either drive it like you stole it, stuck in traffic, idle or you have mechanical issues.

Do this. Park your car and put newspaper under it. Make sure your gas tank does not have a hole in it.

Err.. and this one should be self explanatory.. I do hope you connected your air temperature sensor when you put in your intake....

fill up once a week is common.. 350 to the tank and reserve light pops up around 325ish? depending on stop n go traffic i suppose

When mine was on the road and working i drove to work everyday and back average about a 20-35mile round trip bc i took the scenic route back for the curves and such.... but i was averaging around 30mpg i filled up once a week maybe sometimes it would last over a week almost 2 or more. And i drive 75-80mph and i shift around 4-5K. And sometimes i drive faster like at night on the interstate or something when no ones really out on the roads and i want to clear my mind and i still average around 30mpg. Something really must be wrong with the car or something bc i had full 2.25 exhaust 4-1 header and a 4in intake.

Sell all those fancy emblems on your car and get a tune-up seriously its not that hard if you think about it even with a heavy foot I get 28mpg with mostly city driving.

I have an ST and I know they get better gas mileage, but still. I have a long CAI, 4-2-1 header, and a 2.25" catback.
I just drove to DC and down there, well compared to my town. There are NO cops, and the slow lane was doing 80. So after driving 5-6 hours I was in the fast lane doing like 85-90 for well over an hour and still ended up getting around 30mpg from my fill up.
And then as we got there, we got stuck in traffic... and well I was driving like a dic* ill be honest lol, shifting around 5k.
But still ended up with around 30mpg.
I would check your alignment, fuel tank... oh and slow down a bit

For some odd reason i was getting under 25 mpg when i first got the car but since ive added some goodies it shot up to almost 30 mpg. I did 3" CAI, 4-1 Header, custom 2.5" Dp with Magnaflo Hi Flo and Greddy SP2 along with NGK Plugs + Wires, New Vacuum lines, Cleaned the butterfly valve + Intake Manifold.

Personally i wouldn't sell it, just needs some tlc i would think. (and BTW, I have a very heavy foot and i downshift. I rarely use brakes, and i shift at ~5600 rpms.)

Check to see if your Catalytic Converter is clogged, you could try running fuel injector cleaner through your fuel system, and try a different gas station. Ive switched from mobil to bp and ive seen an increase in mileage. (some places water it down, so to speak.)

Hope you keep it.

I'd say do some general maintenence on the car as people above have mentioned and maybe re-think your driving style, I know that if I drive like a granddad then I can get over 25MPG from my GT-Four, so I'd say a GT should easily be able to beat that.

I deliver pizza in mine... heavy foot on every light, car gets turned on and off about 30 times a night, delivering i get 22mpg daily driving for personal stuff i get about 27mpg (still heavy foot). i use 0w 30 mobil 1 syn, iridium plugs and a k&n drop in filter. replaced all the wheel bearings the week after i bought the car because they were noisy and it increased my mileage significantly. changing to lightweight synthetic and using a premium air filter also upped my mpg and gave me some better throttle response. Last but not least have your tires filled with nitrogen better handling and smoother ride also they seem to never lose pressure compared to compressed air, shop i got my tires at did it for me for only $10 and they havent changed as much as .1 psi in the 2 months they have been on the car (either that or my tps are screwed lol)
