I started porting my spare intake today. Wow, what a mess. This intake came off John's (mynzeyes) motor. I'm sure this motor was relatively well cared for but man it had a lot of gunk in it!! Heres what it looked like when I split the intake halves:
As you can see, there is a lot of built up crud on there. I spent today mostly cleaning it up with the dremel, getting the gunk off, smoothing casting marks and the like. I worked really hard on one of the dividers and 2 runners have the plenum side almost done. Its going to be impossible to reach all the way through the runners, they're just too long. What I'm going to do is get the runner shapes and sizes the way I want then sandblast the thing. The sand will act similarly to the extrude hone process and remove the grime and somewhat smooth the surface finish. I'm really pretty impressed with toyotas engineering so far. The surface finish on the inside of the manifold isn't bad once you get past the dirt. The runner shapes are a little screwy where they exit the plenum but I think I can make it work. Also the plenum is a little strange....not like anything I've ever seen before. You'll probably be able to see what I'm talking about in the pictures....the dead space (why a plenum works so it has to be there) is really really irregularly shaped. The only thing I can think of is that it just worked out to do it that way. As of now I'm not sure that I'm going to mess with the actual plenum shape much, I think I'm going to focus on the runners from the plenum to the head and the interface between the TB and the plenum. Heres what it looks like after tonight. The right two runners are getting close to being done. Its really hard to see in the picture how exactly they've been reshaped, but trust me, they're different. |

That looks good.
How much are you taking off? Are you going to port your head too? I think the rule of thumb is to always "step down" the air so the flow is smoother. -Bryan- -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

Right now I'm just going to port match the intake and dyno it. Later I'll do then head but I'm not sure if that will come before the rest of the new motor, or after. I'm not sure what you mean by 'step down'. The thing that most people miss is that its not all about hogging everything out trying to get the most air in. Its all about flow control and intake charge velocity. Especially on a motor like this that makes good torque and power at lower rpm.
The biggest thing I found that I'm excited about 'fixing' are some of the casting 'pockets' in the runners right by the head. They're obviously there on purpose, but they're there because of ease of manufacture, not performance. I'm going to be epoxying them closed and polishing them flush. I'll post pics when I get a chance. |

I mean like dont make the head opening smaller than the intake exit. So the Air doesn't have to "step" up and have the flow changed.
Im sending my head out tomorrow to be rebuilt and gasket ported also. What new motor??? You have something you want to tell us? -Bryan- -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

You never ever want to have any kind of step, up or down. Thats what port matching is, matching the port face on one piece to the port on another. I'll be doing it on the TB to intake interface and the intake to head interface.
I dunno what to tell you about the motor. Let me put it this way: I now have in my possession 1 spare 7AFE and one spare transaxle. The diff is coming out of the tranny tomorrow to get sent of to have a limited slip put in it. I'm tearing down and building the motor as funds permit. But after buying a motor, tranny, and several thousand dollars worth of turbo stuff, funds are a little tight this month. I guess you'll just have to wait and see how it all turns out. I'll try to keep it all updated on my website. |

did you say limited slip?? for the stock 7A tranny? Who, what, when and most important where can i get one?
