Ok so I'm gonna be painting my car, I mostly wanna take care of some damaged areas to both the quarter panels and passenger fender but i'll probably end up just spraying the whole car since theres plenty of rock chips at the front bumper and hood and other nicks here and there, I got the code for my paint color 3L2 i'm just wondering how much paint will I need and how much clear coat? thanks for any advise

have been looking into repainting my car and looking for additional input.
I just want to know how much base coat I will need. The primer is cheap, so I will buy a gallon of it. (I will not be painting door jams, firewall, or new carbon fiber hood, ect. just purely to coat the outside well. Oh and im painting it orange if that matters.) I have seen everywhere from 2 pints to a gallon and a half? I need more input from a bunch of different people who know painting, just looking for an estimate. Also I will be using a spray gun obviously, and paint that is "ready" no catalyst or anything, if that matters. The paint I want is $75 a quart, is this alot? ($40 a pint I think?) thanks everyone This post has been edited by mgnt232: Jul 15, 2010 - 12:49 AM -------------------- |

Use a HVLP gun. Buy more paint than you think you need. Spend more time on the bodywork and primer because if your base isn't good you'll be disappointed with the final results. If you're new to painting then you should practice on an old car hood or something. It's not hard but neither is riding a bike and that probably took a while for you to learn too. You'll need to get a good feeling for things such as how much air pressure to use. Also invest in a good quality face mask and an filter for your air compressor(the kind that filters moisture and dirt from the tank). You can do this and it is a very rewarding feeling knowing that you did all the work yourself.

Thanks for the advise. I just bought a decent HVLP gun, and a good mask, along with a ton of sandpaper (on sale 10 sheets for a buck lol). Just curious about the amount of basecoat im going to need. I will be starting my own thread for questions I have ...although im sure there will be alot of people saying SEARCH! which i have done lol.
