I know that you said your wheel bearings were done recently,
bu could they have been installed incorrectly?
I had that problem too, I had mechanics tell me my tranny was going, my cv joints were done, even to sell my car or write it off cause it woldn't be fixable.
I took it back to the mechanic who did the wheel bearings, he drove it and said he must have installed them wrong,
And re did the wheel bearings and it was fine.

It actually sounded like something was seriously wrong, like something was going to blow up.
I thought the tranny was going too.
Maybe take a look at that.

I had many problems with them being installed incorrectly on one side and in the end just got a new hub, checked the flange on both sides and they fine although I must say when I did have problems I had a similar clunk that went when they were fixed.

And just like Marino I've looked at every bushing etc and it all is fine, its definitely gearbox.

After realizing my gearbox was doomed I did a burnout on the spot and days after its almost completely gone no joke, Id love to know what it was, I'm thinking its the pinion shaft in the transmission.

I thought I'd bring this back from the dead as it would help people, mean while I bought a new transmission and had it sitting there until the one in the car died (I was 90% sure it was the tranny as I heard it make noises whilst jacked up) anyway today I had to do the inner cv as the boot was split, I took it apart and it had barely any grease (only been split for a couple weeks) the grease that was left was all dried up and hard and the bearings didn't slide smoothly, I cleaned it up with degreaser then regreased it all and put it back together and guess what! clunk completely gone. /facepalm.
