Hey,
I just got that stupid little plastic trim piece that covers the hole around the shifter for an automatic (thanks Mike) but I don't know how to get it in. Do I take off the top part of the shifter? Does anyone have any idea? Any help would be awesome cuz I dropped another quarter down there today on my way through tolls... Thanks! |

I dont have an auto so im not rlly sure but i would just go out there with a small flathead screwdriver and start prying lightly on it, and if it has alot of tension try to take off some things around it to see if it loosens up GL -------------------- |

I dunno if we are thinking of the same thing...
But, majority of bits in that area are tabbed on, not screwed in. Pry/Push with care. |

If you can, try to post a picture of what you are talking about. I had an auto celica and took apart the shifter surround multiple times but im a little confused on what you are talking about....

ive never tried taking it off. i think hes talking about that plastic piece where you shift gears next to the P R N D 2 1. take the plastic part around the whole piec and look at it, i know it sticks down in the bottom front. and go from there

You have to pull apart the whole dash to get all of that out. Pull the center console, then the lower dash. You'll get to it eventually.

I took it off and sold it to him and I didnt have to take the dash off... I broke the auto shifter piece cause I didnt take the time to pop some of the tabs off, but you deff wouldn't have to take the dash apart to get to the shifter... |

I just found out what part you are talking about. You have to take off your lower dash, then take off the shifter (one or two screws on the back side of the shifter) and then that plastic cover piece should be held on with a couple of screws... at this point, the plastic / rubber piece your missing should just drop right in. Hopefully this helps....

Thanks for the help. This seems like it's gonna be a lot of work to keep more quarters from falling down to where I can't get them. I'll tackle it this weekend and let you guys know how it goes.

I took it off and sold it to him and I didnt have to take the dash off... I broke the auto shifter piece cause I didnt take the time to pop some of the tabs off, but you deff wouldn't have to take the dash apart to get to the shifter... You broke the "auto shifter piece." I think that may be the thing that, to avoid breaking, requires the lower dash to be removed. There's the top-trim piece that just clips in which also has the cigarette lighter/pocket and then there's a couple other pieces of trim under it. To get anything else out after the upper-most piece of trim, you need to pull the lower dash and center console. Pulling the selector stick is a bitch too, there's two screws but the O/D switch keeps it tightly bound in. I never learned the correct way to remove that either, I know most just pop out the O/D switch and cut the wires, but there's gotta be a way to disconnect the wire under the auto-shifting unit. -------------------- ~Moving on to a 2002 Corolla S~ R.I.P Tom Celica - 1994-2010 |

Im not exactly 100% sure what your talking about... But if its the P R D 3 2 1 thing, you have to : Pull off the radio bezel peice held by clips, unscrew the 2 screws that hold the shifter bezel together, and the take the middle console peice off you have to Take off the glove box, then you will see the screws in the back on the bottem for the middle peice, then on the drivers side remove the bottem plastic peice under the steering wheel, then you will see the screw on the back right side unscrew that, and finnally remove the 2 bolts under the console lid and just pull it off. Be careful off the AC control, dont pull it put with it.
It sounds hard but it really only takes about 15-20 minutes to take all that out. Putting it back in you have to do it in order. It really isnt complicated. |

I do mine like this:
1)Pull the gear all the way back to "L" position by pressing that little red button on the gear selector. 2)Put the front of the piece into the two holes on the bigger trim that contains the radio,climate control and stuff. 3)While doing this, shift the gear selector up to a position where it does not block the plastic piece from coming down and fitting into the lower/flat selector part. hope this helps. Hey,i don't have any screws on the trim piece that sits around the gear selector.It's just the push/pry thingy,hope you're referring to the same thing. |

Thanks everyone for the feedback, but I'm still kinda confused. Here is the piece I'm talking about:

I picked up some frost king and carpet padding and have done the doors and trunk and am considering lining under the carpet if it's not too difficult. I'll post pics of whatever I get done once it's all finished. Tryin to get the interior all finished before I move on to the hard part: body work haha. Thanks guys |

Right, that's the one. First you pull the trim with the cigarette lighter/pocket/etc up. Move the gear selector to L or 2, pull up on that piece of trim, and then pull it out and disconnect the wires for the cigarette lighter/light. Then that piece can come out entirely. From here, you have to pull the center console (two 13mm bolts inside the console and two tabs on the lower-dash plastic). Then you can pull the lower dash, which I haven't done personally, but instructions are above (remove under the steering wheel trim, unscrew 10mm bolt, remove glovebox, unscrew other 10mm bolt, pull out lower dash). There are a couple screws between the two seats facing in towards the center on the side of each piece of the lower dash as well, those need to come out.
