So I'm in need of getting new tires for my stock rims because they are getting kind of bald on the inside. I've gone to a few places already and they don't have the exact 205/55/R15 tires there, but they do have 205/60/R15's. They keep telling me it'll throw my speedometer off by a few miles an hour and that my braking distance will be semi reduced. I just want to know if that is true or if it's just B.S.

Idk i was told that too, i went from the stock 15s like what you have to 17's 225 45 17R and honestly braking is a bit different, the ride is a bit different, but my speedo is the same.

just found one place that has some Dunlop Direzza's in stock so I'll be going there tomorrow to get them put on (hopefully)

They most likely aren't lying to you. The Celica has an unusual tire size. Most tire manufacturers aren't offering any options for us anymore. Most auto manufacturers are using larger rims now, not 15" rims, and those that are still using 15" rims are getting a bigger sidewall than a 55 series. If you switch to a 16" or 17" rim, you'll be able to more easily find tires. My IS 300 uses a 215/45/17 tire. A 45 sidewall, if you missed that. Yet I can still find more tires and cheaper than anything for a Celica.

I have 17's and when i pass those "you are going this fast" radar sign, my speedo's a couple off.

Well I also have 18 inch rims from my parts car that I'm cleaning up and putting on in the spring and it made me think, why the F**k does is matter that much to them that I need the factory spec size on my stock rims? It's so dumb. I mean I would figure it would be off my a few mph lol I never realized how strict some places were with that crap.

yeah, thats lame they straight up wouldn't do it. I just got a warning, as with a lot of aftermarket parts. "For track use only" etc..haha

A 60 serious side wall is fine instead of 55. I used those on my car for a while and i didn't notice a difference.
It actually reduced the 4x4 look a bit at stock ride heights

Yeah it throws your speedometer off, because it's calibrated to a specific rotational size. When you start getting bigger wheels/tires the circumference changes and it throws off the speedometer.


And the math is like this - with "old" being 205/55 and "new" being 205/60


Speed Comparison:


Old front tire revolutions per kilometer: 525.
New front tire revolutions per kilometer: 508.
New front tire is at 103KPH (64MPH) when spinning at the old tire's 100KPH (62MPH) RPM.


Old rear tire revolutions per kilometer: 525.
New rear tire revolutions per kilometer: 508.
New rear tire is at 103KPH (64MPH) when spinning at the old tire's 100KPH (62MPH) RPM.

i actually got some Dunlop Direzza tires from a Goodyear place near my house, about $450 for the tires, with mounting, balancing, disposal, and the stems.
I think they're very good tires, they have alot of traction (can't even squeal my tires anymore) and they ride veryyy nice

so since i have 18 in rims from the parts car I would be better off getting 215/35/r18 over a 215/45/r18 because my actual speed will be a .13 difference with the 35 and it would be a 5mph difference with the 45?
i know that the 35's won't ride as comfortable though =/ but whatteverrr haha
