Thats true. We are doing some basic electronics work in engineering class with resistors and diodes, and all this setup is is just a variable resistor (the pot) with a diode that only allows current to flow one way. This will reduce voltage for all values that the ecu sees, similar to a basic fcd.

Right. but replace those diodes with zener type 4.9v or lower and you will be set. The voltage diode you select will not pass any current(clamp) under the selected voltage. so if you chose a 5.1v diode, the map operation will be unaffected at all.

BTW, if this doesn't work out for you, I can design a circuit that will work better/be cleaner.

So they sell zener diodes in different voltage ratings? This means that all you would need is the diode to be wired in right before the ecu and the pot is not needed.
