To answer the original question, if you want less downtime, I say turbocharge it. Obviously, it's going to run you $1,000 or so more AFTER the final cost of parts for the little miscellaneous things you'll need to buy or replace. Those who talk about: "ohhh nooo, you'll blow up a piston...uhhhh, a rod will get stuck in the wiper motor"...and all the stupid ignorant replies, first they don't know what they're talking about because they don't even have a turbo 7A-FE. In my opinion, it is VERY easy. Check this out.
1)Take off stock manifold 2)Install turbo manifold or header 3)Remove radiator from mounts 4)Install exhaust gasket and then the turbocharger 5)Remove oil sensor, install fitting and install oil feed line Etc... Simple stuff...the installation is easy...it's the tuning that's very delicate. A swap will be cheaper but you'll have more downtime and also you'll need miscellaneous parts that cannot be sourced like turbo stuff in a speed shop. If you want to drive your car in no time, bragging rights for having a fast car with the engine it came with from the factory at the expense of less upgradeability and more money, go for turbochargin the 7A-FE. If you want more horsepower, more reliability (since it's a turbo engine already), and less money spent, go for the 3S-GTE swap. installing a 7a turbo kit should take a mech with zero experience a weekend and a moderate tuner the day.. given all parts and tools are present..

i would have to agree with that. the first weekend i started work it took friday afternoon, all saturday and all sunday to get everything on and do something for IC piping. then the turbo and manifold came off till the next weekend becuase i wanted the least amount of downtime and the guy that was going to make my DP was busy lifting trucks till the next weekend 2nd weekend i got everything on the car with a temp DP and drove around at 3-4psi tueday after, i had the dp made. 3rd weekend was devoted to fixing the little problems. which is still going on. the work never ends with custom stuff like this. give me 45min and i can make my car NA again(give me 3 hours and the car will be 100% stock under the hood). give me a day and all the parts and i can make another ST(and probably a different car) turbo, running great with almost no problems in two days. first day for the install, second to check everything and work out what ever problems there may be. nothing beats the feeling that good experience gives you. for example, of 3500 students at my school, i am one of two that has turboed an NA car. and the other kid had a full kit and a machine shop to work in. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

Yeah, it took me and friend from 10PM to 4AM to install everything and have it ready to drive it to the muffler shop the next day. That included removing the old injectors and installing the new ones, along with removing the radiator to bang the sheet metal behind it in, because my exhaust manigolf is very long and throws the turbo to the front too much. I encountered MAJOR obstacles that contributed to the delay of my setup, which is installed but VERY buggy. The first was that the 550cc Venom injectors made the car run in 3 cylinders. Also, it took the muffler shop guy 3 FULL days to finish what could have taken less than 6 hours to another guy. He talked for hours and only worked for minutes. THREE days wasted, and that was with me present the whole time pushing him, so it could've taken longer. But he did a great job and only charged me I think $250 or less for EVERYTHING, including connecting all the silicone couplings with the piping and letting me borrow his tools for replacing the spark plugs every 5 minutes that the engine was running. And borrowing tools was against the policy in his shop.
![]() But I've felt what 3 psi can do to my auto Celi...can't wait for 9 DELICATELY DYNO TUNED psi ![]() -------------------- |
