HEY! excited to see this network of other proud 6gen owners and ideas/help. Just inherited a gray 94 GT hatch from my pops. Unfortunately, this car is not in good condition....mainly the manual transmission frown.gif hard to put it into any gear including R, feel a little grinding, definitely needs a clutch (slips), and weve been told by our mechanic that the tranny just needs to be replaced (I think the slave and master were changed not too long ago).

Motor was replaced with a used (60k mi) one at 140k mi (now the car is up to about 230k mi now). I have a feeling it has been run for a while with low oil (pops didnt check oil regularly and it kinda leaks). Theres a faint Whirring when accelerating, but im hoping that its from the Transmission. Exhaust smoke looks perfect though, and there are bigger problems to deal with (like in the tranny), so as far as im concerned the motor is all gravy. I am hoping that if I change the clutch and maybe the fluid, it will erase this transmission issue. I HOPE....otherwise I may not post on this anymore frown.gif

HOWEVER my other car is a 98 civic ex, and as fantastic (but extremely slow) as the Honda is, the Celica:
- looks better inside and out (like a friggin Supra inside)...and dare I say better looking/less girly than the 7th gen? smile.gif
- faster (feels faster at least), waaaaay more torque than the civic
- has working A/C
- handles so much better
- most importantly its MANUAL! save the manuals!
- Hatchback can haul so much stuff with the rear seats folded, its awesome...have moved bookshelfs, a fridge, and tons of other equipment/****
- Great smooth ride and nice sport seats (civic is like sittin on planks)
- Interior quality (soft touch everywhere....new small cars aren't even this well padded)
- 25 mpg! thats with a solid mix of bmore inner city/high speed highway, with A/C on almost all the time and spirited driving...barely a difference from the 1.8 civic

I would like to again highlight how well this car handles. Seriously for a FWD, in my experience in twisty backroads/highway/whatever, this thing (to me at least) has minimal understeer and is so solid/planted. Steering is perfectly weighted, enough feedback to get by, and oversteer is easy to accomplish if needed, and very controllable...the civic or any other of my friends FWD cars just understeer drastically in fast corners and its pretty scary. I am floored by how well this old cheap entry toyota coupe handles... confidence inspiring. I haven't felt this much control/confidence in the way a car handles since my e30 (old bmw 3 series). I love almost everything about this car, Celica ftw! Ill try to take a pic sometime, but beware...its stock, the paint is faded to hell, and it has steel wheels w/covers.

Now if only it was a little faster....

Get yourself some pennzoil synchromesh gear fluid and see if that helps your transmission. A lot of people swear by it- it made shifting for me so much easier. Drain bolt at the bottom, fill bolt on the side, fill it up right to the lip just before it comes back out on you.

And keep it at the correct oil level and these engines will just keep on running.
