So I woke up this morning, feeling great and heading to a TRD meet looking for some supra action. Then I heard this sqeaky sound coming from under the hood. At first I tought it was a drivebelt slipping, but when the car came a little hotter, it didn't stop. I pulled over to have a look under that hood and noticed that a little smoke was coming out of the timing belt cover. I think it's coming from the water pump and that the bearing might be weared.

Has anyone of you guys experienced this before? What do you think about this and can I still drive it a little just to get to a good garage? Since I don't have time neither the tools to do it myself...

Thanks for looking!

I asked a mecanics i know and he told me the sound would come from the water pump wich would spill some coolant that would burn on the engine, near the cover. But it is sure that i'll take a look under the cover to see what's happening with the timing belt before anything else. The sound really seems to be coming from a weared bearing tought. I'll keep you up with this. Thanks!

timing belt and water pump is... not fun work with the 7a frown.gif. And could cost a pretty penny, depending on the shop.
My timing belt went about a week after i fixed everything for a month lol. But I was quoted like $525. I only went to one shop though and decided to do it myself. But a warning it could be costly

Yupp. But you may as well do the water pump while ur in there, not any more work.
I only went to one shop a few miles from me, figuring it wouldnt be much. And the "flat rate" hours to do it, came to like 525

Im sure you could source the parts for around 100 or so (belt, tensioners, gaskets, springs, water pump, etc). But yeah, alot of places charge the proverbial "arm and a leg" for work. Add parts, plus 70-90 an hour/labor and it adds up quick. With parts, a friend, and a guide (chiltons, BGB, 6gc threads) you can have it done in about a day for 1/4 the price.

My timing belt is 10 000km old and cost me 175$ CAD all done... Think you should change garage tongue.gif . I think my problem would only be the water pump, but I will chek if smthg's wrong with the belt while being in there. The thing is I could do it myself, but it would be pretty long cause I'd check like 10 times each move I make to be sure it's well done. I also don't have time to do this with university stuffs...

Yeah, already have the Haynes manual, also have the friend and the threads, but time is missing! You think I could get all the parts for aprox. 100 bucks? That'd make my day! smile.gif The thing about the labour cost is that I know a good mecanics who works for 40$/hr so it isn't so bad if he takes like 2.5hrs to do it... If only I can finaly reach him!

I'll try to get him tomorrow, or else I might take all tuesday long to do it by myself... Would a rebuilt pump do the job?

Thanks for your support guys

My mecanics says he can do it, parts and job for 350$ total, approx 200$ for the labour... If only I had time and no studies... I might head this way and burn that 200$

bud, your water pump is NOT under the timing cover.
standing at the passenger wheel facing the motor, left to right, there are 3 pulleys at the top portion of the motor
1. The alternator
2. Water pump
3. Power steering.

i had a bad tensioner (locked up) and it did the same thing. smell the smoke. if its sweet smelling, its coolant, if it smells like burnt rubber... then it is prob your timing belt melting away..

I know its not under the cover tongue.gif , but it could be a small leak of coolant from the pump, burning somewhere and smoke coming up, passing trought the cover or smthg like that I tought. Yeah, about the smell, the thing is that it dosen't smell alot, but the thing i'm sure is that it doesn't smell burnt rubber. That's why my first hypothese was the water pump. Sometimes, it looks more like some kind of fume than thick smoke.. So I guess it could be like small drops of coolant. I took a quick look at the timing belt by pulling the upper part of the cover and it didn't seemed weared. I'll get this all checked friday and I'll give you some feedback. Thanks alot!

So like some of you guys said, it was actually the timing belt bender that was jammed. So it'll cost abit less that I tought. In some strange way, the belt wasn't weared much so I don't have to change it... Anyways, it's only 10000km old so. Thanks for all the infos guys!
