don't mean to steal your thread...but i have a noise in the front of my car too....it rattles more than clunk noise....only when i accelerate and when car is warm up while accelerating...up past to higher speed.... it disappears. what could this mean?

A loose object.
Really you need to be more specific because it could be your wheel, strut, bearing, axle, tie rod, exhaust, heat shield, battery, exe.
pretty much anything and everything can rattle under the hood.

i have a e153 tranny and the mr2 inners and alltrac outter axles all hooked up.
been running it for a years now without a problem..just recently i started to notice a clunking noise coming from the front left(when inside of the car) axle. i can feel movement/something happening from the inside of the car a clunking/thumping noise. at first i thought i had something loose. i lifted the car up and checked and double checked everything...everything is down to torque. dropped the car back down and the noise went away for a few days...i took like 2 or 3 hard turns and the noise came back! decided this time to lift the car up and throw her in gear. some crazy clicking noise came was happening from the axle/tranny. only happens in gear or while the axle is moving.
so i decided to single the noises out. at first it sounded like the tranny..so i scope the tranny and it was good, even did a tranny flush and refill. noise was still there...so i decided to scope the axle, the cluncking or clicking noise seems to be coming from the inner bearing of the axle (where the mr2 inner goes into the tranny and the alltrac axles breeeds into the inner mr2 part?
has anyone ever heard or had a similar problem?

do you guys think its a axles bearing problem or do you guys think its from the tranny..
i can feel a thumping noise under my feet as i drive..it feels like for example if something was loose and it just falling/hitting the axle while it was spinning.

any help would be great...

its alot more likely a axle issue. sounds like the cage may be cracked.

BTW 91 v6 camry axles should work.. you can hop into autozone and buy the half shaft, which includes BOTH cv joints, and bolt it to your mr2 inner.

yeah im going to try and pull the axle this weekend and see if it could be the cage..what sucks about the toyota tranny/axle is when you pull the axle it freaken leaks out all the good stuff you put into it.
thanks P and stephen for the suggestions
i alway thought the v6 camry axle would work just never tried it. alway went with what other people knew would work.
ill take picture of the damage if possible or if someone else is there with me lol!

um. the whole assy will unbolt from the inner stub = no leakage of fluid. the inner stub doesnt have the joint in it at all. the outter half has both joints, so its possible to do this w/o leaking fluids wink.gif

yes it worked untill this morning! no clue what it is anymore! the cage was broken..now im thinking the root cause is the inner stub...looking for one as of right now.../bashing head against metal!

Ugh - brutal. So you're saying that you fixed the cage, and now its making that same noise again?

... only when you turn, or all the time?

yeah i replaced the whole axle. since the other one the cage was broken..it gets louder when i turn but pretty much when i drive straight turn up down left right..the thumping clunking noise is still there...
been thinking alot about it and picturing it in my head how the whole axles assembly works when i drive and putting every possible cause of the clunky noise into play. since everything is intact and torque to spec..and the axle shaft been replaced..the only other cause is the inner cv stub...maybe a broken tooth/splin.. and its skipping when i drive.
or maybe the axle is too short on that side? but yeah anyone with a extra inner cv stub let me know ill need it asap if i cant find anyone here where i live with one.

So did you use 185 axles or camry V6?
are you using spacers at all? do you have LSD?

did some research and lifted the car up last night..pretty much took apart everything i possibly could to verifie that nothing was broken or had chipped teeth or anything. the inner stub looks great and nothing seems wrong with it. end up taking the new axle out and measuring it and measuring the old axle. they are both 24 and something inches long. called around and ask to see if there was any differents in axles. couldnt find anything untill my buddy from toyota called me and said that there is 2 different kind of axles one is 24inchs long and one is 27inch long. not sure whats the difference between the axles are but there is a different in length between the axles!
so beware that if you do plan on doing the swap make sure you get the longer one.....im not totally sure if thats the problem and i wont find out till saturday night( cause thats when the axles gets in) but for sure ill let everyone know what happens.

alright first off THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HELPED!

secondly the problem! stupid i should have known but it didnt cross my mind at all.. so here is the verdict... if your car is dropped and you are using the e153 tranny... it really depends on the car and probably the drop but you will need a spacer for the driver side axle too!
1/2inch (batman has a picture of the spacer on his gen3 swap thread)
that axle was stretched this in turn causes the axle to become loose off the bearings inside of it. then inturns causes a thumping noise and clunckying noise(axle rod not lining up with the bearings). since ive installed the spacer the axle is now in aligned again and is happy! no more cluncking or thumping noise.

celi_6

hey i couldnt send you the pm...

i actually just order a new one for 50 buck at autozone. i use the new axle then i took apart the old one that was poping..just take the old one off and take apart the part where the bearings are in and use that cylinder/circler part (bearings are inside of it) as the spacer.. you ahve to go to a manchine shop and have them cut the cylinder/circler part to 3/4 or 1/2 inch, go to a local ace hardware and get longer bolts. i would say cut it to 3/4inch first and try that..with the half inch part i still have a problem axle poping.
it will probably cost you about 100bucks to get it everything working properly.

hopefully that helps...batman has a better picture of the spacer on his page or build thread.
