Intake Temp Sensor Options

When I was uninstalling the air filter box, there's this lil plug that you could just pull out. That's the temp sensor right?


What will happen if I forgot to drill a hole on my cold air intake to shove this sensor thru the tube?

Your car will run right? When I had my Celica I put in a cold air intake and drilled the whole for it and just used some silicone goop to hold it in.

Yep, thats the thermometer. You definately need it for your car to run efficiently. Just drill a hole in your CAI (I think I used 1/2 inch?) Just don't make the hole to big or it will move around. To hold it in place, use the little rubber thing that was holding it in place on the stock airbox.

oh god i just relized when i put in my short ram in I left my temp sensor just hanging in my engine bay for the past 4 months or so...did this hurt anything? lol...woops!

it doesn't really hurt anything... your fuel maps would just not be as accurate...

To clear things up....

If you leave ur temp sensor just hanging under the hood. It will actually be reading hotter air then it would if it was in the stock air box. This sends rong data to the cars comps and i believe less fuel to the cylinders.

Basically while your intaking cold air (short rams not included) you comp is being told that its actually intaking WAYY hotter air. This is bad and in a sence defeats the whole idea of CAI.

Best solution is drill a whole and use the rubber peice thats on the stock airbox to hold the senor in the pipes.

If you look at teh CAI how to there are pix.

Another thing to note are those little resistors ppl sell on ebay promissing HP gains. What this does is trick ur engine into thinking its getting really cold air and thus thow more feul into the cylinders. While this isnt the best thing for the car it does show the importance of having the temp sensor actually sensoring the air that goes into the engine rather then WAY hot air thats in the engine bay.

wow thanks for the replies guy BUT...

what if i had the sensor down under the filter so its actually sensing colder air while i am driving...that may be why my tempertue on the gauges read just a little bit above the C on the gauge....could this be a VERY cheap way to get "cold air"??? or is the not good?

The ecu doesn't rely completely on that sensor to calculate fuel maps... so its effects aren't major. The only time it can adversely affect the ecu, is when the sensor dies or is jumped (like those ebay power chips)...

The temp guage measures coolant tempurature.

The temp gauge in your car is measured from the Coolant Temp Sensor... not the intake air temp sensor.

so check my coolant levels?...so i am confused...please tell me if i am right or wrong..i am trying to understan this, the sensor that goes into my intake has nothing to do with the temp gauge in my car....its only there to let the ecu know what tempurature air is entering into my intake?

ok now that we got that all cleared up...i was wondering why my guage in my car is right above the C when i am driving but sometimes it just randomly goes up about half way while i am driving....and when i am stopped it ALWAYS goes up to half way...is tthere something wrong w/ my coolant? or is there something else that could be the problem?

This makes me wonder. My operating temp puts the needle on the temp gauge at its half way point. Is this normal or should i be worried? i think its normal right?
