There's not much else I can say to describe the problem. The engine runs amazing from idle to 4000, but then at 4k I can feel it stop pulling [as in the power just seems to stop] and it just kind of hesitates there and bucks a little bit. I dont want to blow it up so I upshift as soon as it starts doing it. I currently have no CELs, I checked the plug wires earlier and they look basically brand new and all seem to be connected properly. The prev owner was a member here and had NGK plugs put in. I'm thiking of replacing the plugs but not sure what else would cause this problem. Thanks for any input. |

can you take a vid of it happening?
the 5s really runs out of steam above 4400rpm, but sounds like your having more of a problem than just the normal 5s choking out up top. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

@ PRESURE No chance of a vid at the moment bro. I understand about it running out of power at 4000+, that's what the PO told me when I was raging about this. But I also know it's not a diesel truck and if I want to rev it to 6000 it sshould do that no problem. Everything just seems to come to a halt at 4000 though. @ 95CELIST Not a clue man. The car is stock except for intake. that is exactly what my Supra did when the timing was off by 1 tooth. maybe your belt slipped How do I check the timing? |

I had a mazda rx-7 that did the same thing @ 5000rpm the plugs looked fine but changed them anyway, and the problem was resolved....I know a rotary engine is very diff from 5sfe, but it mightbe your problem. combustion is combustion.

get a timing light and hook it up to your battery and the the flasher up to the #1 spark plug wire. it will flash each time that plug fires. point it at the crank pulley and see where the timing is. oh before you do that you have to jumper Te and E1 on the diagnostic box, that will put you in test mode

yeah im willing to bet its a timing issue. i've done many t-belts (one on a 5s) and if they're off one tooth they either idle like shiit, and run great at high rpm, or they run great at low rpm, and like shiit at higher rpms (the 5s bogged around 4000-4500 when it was a tooth off, btw)

guys the 5s is at an angle, so the cams will be a bitch to set. PLUS you have to make sure theyre lined up with eachother. im betting thats both your issues
move timing one tooth forward, test move timing back 2 teeth, test. -------------------- QUOTE "And, as always, your friendship, help, and dedication to the advancement of Texas Celica dominance is GREATLY appreciated. had a problem similar to this in a 280zx, ended up being a clogged fuel filter, the fuel pressure couldnt get high enough to push the power above 3500 rpms on my z it would lope between 3400 and 3500 rpms and not push any further. changed the fuel filter and i was able to push it into the low 6ks just fine.

I'm having the same problem, but there is no bucking or sputtering. I just have dramatically reduced power at 4k, and almost NO power at 5.5k. New timing belt, thrice-cleaned throttle body, and still nothing.
I DID, however, have the problem of the car lurching as if to lose all power for a split second above 3k, turns out the plug was somehow partially yanked out of the cam sensor and the sensor itself was damaged. |
