Between a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen?

1st gen = the engine from a USDM/JDM 4th Gen Celica GT4
-T-VIS
-CT-26 Single entry Turbo [not very good either]
-Not worth the effort - move on

2nd Gen = the 3S-GTE out of a 5th Gen Celica GT4 or USDM [and older JDM] MR2T's
-T-VIS [Which I personally love but it's an aquired taste for some]
-CT-26 Dual Entry Turbo
-AFM
-Cheaper
-parts available locally at parts houses

3rd Gen = the 3S-GTE out of a JDM 6th Gen Celica GT4 or a JDM '94+ MR2T [never sold in North America]
-No T-VIS
-CT-20b Turbo
-Map Based
-Updated electronics
-more expensive [but worth it]
-some parts can be harder to find but getting better every day

4th Gen = The 3S-GTE out of a JDM Caldina GT-T or GT4
-Coil Over Plug distributer-less Ignition
-One peice Turbo similar to CT-20b
-Map Based
-Modern electronics minus drive by wire BS
-EXPENSIVE
-Parts are hard to find - period

There is a HELL of alot more to it but that should get you started in your search. This Wikipedia article should be your first general introduction then read through the FI section of this forum and MR2oc.com/Altrac.net for more specific info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3s-gte
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-VIS
If you want a stockish engine and want the most out of it you want a 3rd gen but you're gonna have to raise your price range by quite a bit.
If you intend to build it for medium to high HP it really makes very little difference.

so let me get this straight. i checked out those articles and did some research. the third gen is just the second gen with a t20 instead of a t26? i know there's other differences but thats the big one? i have a 94 GT with the 5sfe with wayyyy to many miles and its about time to swap it. im in the process right now of building a tranny out of a 95 GT to compliment the 100 something HP upgrade. if ur within 200 miles of west arkansas ill come get the engine and hand you a thousand dollars cash on the spot. provided an inspection of the engine satisfies me

forget swapping on a 1k budget.
its not gonna happen.
not even if you get the motor free.
(well, if you plan on the fun lasting more than a couple months anyway.)

Why build the tranny when you can buy the E153 tranny and have longer gearing ratios?
The GT tranny can hold up to, if I remember correct, 250hp. Which would work if you don't plan on building the engine much.
Depending on how much you build the GT tranny, yes it would be better than the E153.
What exactly are your plans though? We can can all easily help you out then

It would even be difficult to even turbo your motor on $1,100. There are just too many things that have to be bought. Clutch, gaskets, fluids, etc. For $1,100, you MIGHT be able to find a used 5S-FE to swap into your car, but that's about it.

if your importing from outside of the us, 1100 won't even cover shipping after broker fees to make sure it clears
customs smoothly..

but i mean, more power to you if you can find one here thats cheap....

the only possible way i see this even remotely happening for that cheap, is if by some mirracle you can source
every single part individually for a great deal...

ie: good block from someone, good head from someone else,
and then trying to find all the accessories along with a wiring harness and ecu, along with all the other many little parts?
that would be a nightmare.... my best advice to you would just be to put your 1100 in the bank, and keep putting a little more
away each month until christmas and then talk to our best member to talk to about ordering swaps, and that would be the main
man _JIM_

that would be your easiest and smartest route....
i know it sucks to wait, but its better to wait now and have zero- very few problems later,
rather than to buy a junk engine, or manage to get a decent engine but having a million problems because you don't know whats what
with the setup...

hope i could be of help.

what do you mean by it is the 5sfe?

do you mean thats whats in your car now? all the richee meant when he said that is that you would be way better off
and have alot more luck trying to find a low mileage 5sfe to swap in for that price

take a budget and throw it out the damn window.

Cheap, Fast, Reliable.

Pick 2.

youd be better off pulling your current engine out and just rebuilding her

Funny because basically you are asking for advice. You wont get far with your car without advice or opinions. thats what this site is for. helping each other and giving advice on how to do or fix something. Members on here know what they are talking about because we have heard it all and almost seen it all. Go ahead and find a 3sgte and try dropping it in as is. im sure youll be posting again asking for advice or help...

yeah you can just rebuild the 5S-FE and then squeeze it with nitrous for your 1100 budget. thats about it

Yeah, I realize you have the 5S-FE. But as Novak said, I was just saying that another 5S is about the only motor you'll find in your budget.

Simple as that you cant even find a 3nd gen for that much unless your just extremely lucky.

If your budget is 1100 TOTAL for engine, parts, lines ext no just forget about it. I just spent 1700 on my swap just for little upgrades here and there and replacing parts damaged in shipping, and im still not finished.

Plain and simple you will not swap your car with 1100. I spent that just to replace my blown 5s with another 5s
