What are some really cheap really easy performance mods I could do for a total of less than $1000?
Assume I'm not technical enough to do anything more complicated than changing the oil, and I'd like to be able to keep using 87 Octane fuel if I can. I'd also like to preserve the reliability of the car, and if possible I don't want to do anything that I can't reverse. Now that I've tied your hands... Any suggestions? Thanks. |

cheap an easy
just how i like my women anyway 1-intake--custom CAI or weapon r/injen 2-custom exhaust piping with your choice muffler 3-custom headers (i got quoted $250 at an exhaust shop) 4-SAFC--not much hp but every little bit counts that would put you up around $800-$1000 you could get a pretty decent gain out of those mods...and nothin permanent or damaging or anything to get higher octane gas |

Cool... Does that cost include labor for installation? (I can't trust myself to install half that stuff...) And what's SAFC? (I'm smart like that.)
Thanks! |

no prob Doc SAFC--Super Air Flow Converter basically it adjusts the amount of airflow coming into your engine....with mods and adjusted air flow ratios you could get a pretty decent gain by the way....thats not including labor....intake you can do (check the how-to articles they're helpful) exhaust is faily simple with the right tools and the right ground clearance, headers i would have a shop do that for you (since you'll have to get some custom ones done anyway) and the SAFC have done by a shop with a Dyno or a dyna pack or jet for great results |

The only problem with the SAFC is that it is hard to get it tuned properly without a dyno. You can mess up the engine easily if you don't know what you're doing if you try to tune it.

dyna pack or dyna pro or dyna jet
they all are forms of a dyno that measure out your cars outputs.....horsepower, torque, and sometimes air and fuel ratios and so forth |

Can anything be done with something as simple as an aftermarket ECU chip? I was just on howstuffworks.com and that's something they suggested as a general cheap performance upgrade.

CoolDoctorJ , I highly suggest you learn all this stuff before modifying your car. It would be pointless to have something in your car you can't even pronounce

I agree. That's why I was asking for stuff that's "easier to do than changing the oil."
In all likelihood I'll probably do nothing, but I was just checking to see what was out there. Thanks all. |

even if your not interested, ill throw this option out there.....this is my plan to get a little extra kick.
1.) Custom CAI with heat wrap 2.) UR Underdrive Pulley 3.) Flowmaster 60 series muffler- more for sound than power 4.) ZEX dry nitrous kit- custom mounted digital nitrous pressure gauge and remote bottle opener. 5.) The neccesary lubricants/ignition components/compression checks to keep the engine running smoothly at all times. Just enough for some fun when you want it, while keeping the engine efficient. -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |
