Not completely sure on the gt-4, but on the 5sfe it is a gray wire and to find it you need to go to the igniter on the rear driver's side of the engine compartment and look in a connector in that area. If you think you've found it, just test it with a multimeter on AC mode

There is a blue plug on the back of the instrument cluster. It is pin # 9, wire is gray.

I'm pretty sure you can, but I would soder, or use connectors if you can. I wouldn't want anything to go wrong with the RPM readings.
