I can't find any threads that specify what the issue is. It drives nice and smooth until 65mph+. The steering wheel shakes quite a bit after 65mph and it's starting to annoy me a little. I only drive 6 miles to work so it doesn't bother me as much but when summer comes around and I get to do my 140 mile trips to wisconsin, it'll be an issue. Anyone have any idea of what it might be? Steering rack? Motor mounts? My struts/springs are pretty new all around. Wheels were mounted/balanced and have less than 500 miles. I'm not particularly familiar with this area of expertise so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

wheel bearing, or the hub is only riding on one part of the race( in my instance lol) tires need to be balanced.

could be anything really.. could you dicribe the shaking more indeapth, is it a vibratoin you feel in the car also or just in the wheel... the more info you give the easier it is to pin point.

Balance your tires and get an alignment. I experienced the exact same shaking at speeds above 60ish at the steering wheel. I took the Celica in for an alignment and tire balance check, problem solved.

tires are new and have been balanced. i dont hear anything that could cause me to think it's the wheel bearing. maybe i dont know that it's going bad lol. i might need an alighnment since i did drop the celica. i'll probably do that next week and see if it solves the shaking.

Could be a bunch of things.

Most common IMO is tires balance, and bearing. For me, it was the bearing, and it started at 45. Diffrent car, same engine =P

start with the wheels and tires. the wheels could've been bent from hitting a pot hole, or the belts inside the tires may have shifted but it's unlikely for a set of new tires. does the car maintain its alignment or does it turn to one side while holding the steering wheel steady?

man look at your tire rod because my car did the same thing and my bolt that holds the tire rod end on came off on the high while i was doing a hundred i was stuck on a 3 lane high lucky im not dead ... but yes just because your tires are new and have been balanced does mean anything they could have been balanced wrong .....

Its most likely your tires in need of a balance, most places use those stick on weights which i have had fly off before, or it could be from the tires sitting in the same spot all witer

All in all you should check/perform these things...:
Tie rods,
Wheel bearings,
4 Wheel alignment,
Treads/Tread wear,
Tire balance,
Tire pressure,
Tire rotation,
While your at it you might as well check over your:
Axles,
Ball joints,
Endlinks,
Rotors,
Brake pads.

Or if your like me, STOP DRINKING SO MUCH CAFFEINE! laugh.gif

I will check the tires first to make sure they are bolted on right in star pattern to the recommended torque. If that checks out ok then take car in for tires to be balanced and tell them what speed you have the shaking. That should solve the problem, if not then I will check the other stuffs as mentioned above.
Hopes that helps

This!

I would re-balance them before doing anything else.. (obviously you should check tire pressure before doing that biggrin.gif )
I would guess that either one of the stick on weights has flown off (these things are made cheap now and half of them don't use 3m adhesive any more.. mad.gif )
or the machine just wasn't calibrated/on the fritz that day you had them balanced. (balancing machines can be really finicky bitches for what ever reason..)

If you had a bad wheel bearing you would likely get a noise along with it.

One other thing is some times if your front rotors are REALLY warped it can transfer into the steering wheel at high speeds without the brakes even being applied.. but if this was the case.. you would have a wicked vibration when you hit the brakes too.

While your car is up in the air having the balance checked.. get them to check your front end out too just for piece of mind smile.gif

Mine was shaking last week because I changed the brake pads and did not resurface my front rotors.
After I reserfaced the rotors and gave it a couple days to settle in I totally forgot about that until now.
My rotors had a ridge of metal around the ouside. Also my shake and shimmy was at 75 mph.

Wow...I lost copious amounts of brain cells reading the replies to this thread.

In states in OP that wheels/tires are new and just balanced, yet every single reply says tires.

You probably need an alignment.

Like Kyle said, those stick-on weights can fly off. It's happened to me as well. Don't be so quick to rule out possibilities.

Needing to be aligned wouldnt make the wheel shake, unless the toe on it was way way off

If it tends to shake more upon acceleration or going up a hill, etc, the inner cv joints may be worn.
