Darn factory ECU won't let me change anything without blocking everything...I want to install a boost controller in the future...I guess I'll have to mod the ECU too. Anyone know what would be my options for this kind of mod?

AFC,

or here try this, I got their wideband o2 sensor and it works pretty well.

You don't need to touch the ECU to lower or raise the boost.

You disconnect the 2nd actuator hose and block it off at the engine and at the actuator, then you connect your boost controller between the boost source and the actuator.

Never install SAFC on a 3S-GTE, adjustments over just a couple % will make things worse for the factory ECU.

It's the worst way to adjust Air/Fuel in a turbocharged application as it does nothing more than fooling the ECU into thinking it's at a different different load point than it really is. This means fuelling changes don't come without ignition changes, usually for the worst. Eg correcting a rich condition may also advance ignition (leaning+advancement can bring on detonation), while correcting a lean condition may retard ignition (richening+retardation will reduce performance).

The wastegate is factory sprung to 10psi, The TVSV bleeds off enough air so that up to 14psi will take for the actuator to see 10psi.

And factory ECU is mapped to ~17psi, 18psi brings on fuel cut.

Common way to boost over 17 is by using an Active Clamp on the Map sensor at approx 4.1 volts. This means the MAP sensor is free to read accurately up to 17psi before being locked into 4.1 volts so your ecu will never see above 17psi. Then using a water injection system with a rising rate controller (Like one supplied by AEM) you set it to kick in around 16psi and as the boost pressure ramps up, so does the water pressure.

This is all still while the factory ECU does it's thing in the background.

Boost controllers? Depending on your budget at the cheap end there is used HKS early generation EVC, then towards the more expensive end is Greddy Profec B series, Apex'i AVC-R units, my favourite is the turbosmart e-boost2 series but they are expensive.

Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTWCbjL2M8c&feature=share

if you're tight on cash I highly recommend a used early gen HKS EVC unit

Ok! and let's say I buy one of those, I had the Apex'i in mind...then all I need is install it and tune it on dyno? (because I really don't understand what you said up there haha)

Yeah, or drop down to 3rd gear on the highway and put your foot to the floor until 7000 while your buddy in the passenger seat dials in the boost for you.

You need atleast 3rd or 4th gear to produce enough load to fully spin the turbo

Oh another thing, the BC won't mess up with the ECU? Because I know the ECU can be very picky...And how much power can I expect from this mod?

nah it's sweet, if it's a programmable one you need to tweak the boost curve so it wont spike higher than 17.5psi as 18 will cause fuel cut. so you want a target of 17psi max

Ok! I get it smile.gif
Right now, I'm at 13psi on 1st geat and 15 on all others...what would you suggest? all 5 at 17? or 1st 15 and others 17?

Well, you may not even reach 17 in 1st, it doesn't load up the engine and turbo enough to do so

When you tune boost in 3rd gear, 1st and 2nd will naturally boost lower, while 4th can load up the turbo more than 3rd, the wastegate should hopefully be able to keep up

in other words tune your boost in 3rd gear to 17psi, everything else should automatically fall into place

Nah just 3rd gear on the road, get someone to do it while you drive. The dyno is just so you dont take your eyes off the road at 160kph lol

Ah another thing...where should I put the BC module ? I thought maybe inside the glove box, on top, once it's configured
