Sometime I find my 3rd gear hard to get in...is it normal? I remember having this issue with my MSP with 2nd gear...
Maybe because I'm not used having a normal shifter? (The MSP was my first m/t car and had a short shifter from factory) Edit: Forgot to specify I have a 6 point ceramic clutch is this information could be useful This post has been edited by TheChildOfTheSea: May 3, 2011 - 1:36 AM |

I doubt the shifter has anything to do with it. Short shifter vs stock is just the distance your hand travels to shift the gears. Anyway, Make sure your transmission has the correct amount of fluid in it, sometimes low fluid levels can cause hard shifting. Also make sure that your clutch master cylinder has the correct fluid level in it as well. These are just things to check for good measure, but it really sounds like your synchro might be going out. Does it shift hard all the time, or only on quick shifts?

its really work intensive, and your car will be off the street for a few days if you do, do it. basically you need to take the trans mission off, then the transmission housing... imho if you usually don't work on cars, have someone do it for you.

I had a slight grind on 3rd with I shift semi quick, if quick shift I wouldn't notice it, and wouldnt notice it during normal shifting either, and 4th would pop out during quick shift, I played a little with my clutch pedal height and engagement and it's all good now. no more issues on any type of shifting.
so that's something else to look at. -------------------- |

oh yeah to the OP try draining your trans and refilling it with some synchromesh might help read it does help and sometimes prolongs the inevitable

Yeah the trans oil was changed recently!
I think the problem was in my head...I tried it again today and I didn't have this problem...maybe I was just hitting the wall (trying to shift between the 3rd and 5th gear instead) |

does it feel like its entering the gate or a mushy feeling?
if its not entering the gate then its gonna be with the trans/clutch itself. but if it feels mushy and not entering a gate then id look into your shifter cables. if its your shifter cables you'll soon not have 5th then 4th, 2nd gearings almost in that order -------------------- I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island

I can now shift into first before stopping, and my 5th gear popout has stopped. But I will need a tranny someday. Also I blead my clutch slave and the oil looked like it was black ink and water so I think that would help. The little self bleeder from autozone(about 7.99) makes that a simple job. |

I've heard you're not really suppose to shift into first while still moving because it can start to screw with the transmission after a while. My first gear is a pain to get into even when at a stop sometimes. I'll try what you did in the future and see how it works because it starts to piss me off when it takes a few seconds to get it into gear and people behind you start beeping lol |

The reason why you can't shift in first while still moving is because of the 1st gear guard, it's to prevent you downshift back in first instead of third. My transmission does this too...in traffic I always have to stop completely, and it forces me to do my stops at full time.
