What's the best way to get the drive shaft seal out? I'm talking about the one in the gearbox that faces towards the timing belt end of the engne.
I've removed the axle and can stick my fingers into the gearbox, but I just can't pop the rubber seal out. Any ideas? I assume there's some sort of trick to it. Thanks. -------------------- |

takes more than fingers, you need a seal remover and have to be delicate.

use a long screwdriver or prybar and just pry it out

Thanks for the replies.
I tried the screwdriver method on my spare gearbox and it worked fine with a bit of force, but the one in the car just won't budge. I also tried using a piece of solid metal tube as a lever, then bashed it with a mallet and the seal still won't move at all. Another forum gave me this reply which I think I'll try next: QUOTE Soak it in WD 40 Overnight, Then got some cold spray and spray the seal and imediatly remove it.
If this doesnt work repeat, but heat the outside of the gear box up slightly with some lp gas or oxy. If this dont work you may have more serious problems... -------------------- |

well if youre gonna replace them just get channel lock pliers and manhandle those things out. just dont scratch the inner bore

I used a screw driver and sledge, but that was with it out of the car. If its in the car go to the autoparts store and rent a slide hammer. It will come out easy. Get the hook on the inside of the seal and pound it out.
You couldn't have pounded on them too hard, otherwise they would have broken. If they are in there tough you can just destroy the seal. All it is is thin metal/rubber/tightly wound spring. I used a come-a-long hook. Rubber end of course as to not damage the tranny. Then I stood on the side of the car and yanked on the strap until it popped out.
If you pry it out be careful not to scratch or gouge the tranny where the seal goes. |

Please welcome the latest addition to my tool shed!
Sometimes you just can't beat the right tool for the job. After stuffing around for hours with screwdrivers and whatever, it took about 30 seconds to pop the seal out with the proper tool. The seal is now replaced and there are no leaks. Not yet anyway... Thanks guys. -------------------- |
