So, today, i took the celi to th mechanic. Ive had a oil leak.. need to know where its coming from. They hoist it up, n tell me it good be various things. Apperently they think its my head gasket... But it could be somthing as simple as a seal... i dont think it is though. They couldnt give me a straight answer, kind of annoying. I guess i cant really find out till rip the whole d*mn thing apart. The problem is $$$$$ this celi is starting to be a money pit.

Fix the problem...only for it to be wrong.. spend possible $1000 Or.. Do an engine swap? |

head gasket wtf?
u mean rocker cover gasket? this repair shouldn't be too expensive, I know with these FE engines they leak at the rocker cover gasket at the back of the engine and sometimes around the sump and oil pan if you just pop them off, replace the gaskets and seal off with silicone sealant it should be good as gold. just take your car to a car wash, and wash underneath the car then take it for a drive until you can see fresh oil and that's where it's coming from -------------------- Mike W

He says it could be the camshaft, timing belt, head gasket, or oil pan. ... But its wet where the oil pan isnt.. like, above it. Where do I find the rocker cover gasket? im not understanding exactly. A swap wont help you either because A. most shops dont know how to do one, and B. they would charge you a lot more money than 1,000$. find the leak yourself and tell him specifically what to replace, by the sounds of it he wants to charge you a full days labour to rip apart your motor since he has no previous experience with your motor, he doesn't yet know what he's looking for.
I wouldn't blame your mechanic for doing so, but since it seems he lacks the experience with the celica you best find another mechanic who has worked on atleast half a dozen 5s-fe vehicles, you may find your fix is more like $150 instead of $1000 -------------------- Mike W

Alright thanks guys.
Im gonna take the celi down to a mechanic my uncle goes to, hes no bs. But, not before i give it a once over with the pressure washer and find out where the leak is specifically. |

Oil pump/Seal. Definitely not as bad as a head gasket. Still will be fairly costly to fix as you have to remove the timing belt.

The pics sadly do nto help unless you wash the engine and show us fresh oil.
Based on the pics, it could be the oil pump leaking (though doesn't explain the coating on PS brackets and above). Based on that picture, I would say replace your valve cover gasket, check that the intake manifold nuts/bolts are tight. Then give the engine a good thorough was down. Check your PS pump also as those along with the hoses love to leak. Otherwise, to replace the oil pump gasket, I would suggest waiting until you are going to do the timing belt (assuming your leak is not horrible) that way you can all of it done at the same time. You could replace the oil pump at that time, but the oil pumps generally do not go bad and you can always check the tolerances to be extra sure. I would not return the the place you took the car. Oh and another idea that just came up is they sell the UV dye that you can put in your oil to find leaks. thats the best bet. go have the engine washed and put blue dye and check where the leak comes from....

oil pump seal I just replaced myoil pan gasket and realised that its above it, OIL pump seal check the torque on the bolts bbut you'll probably have to change that` seal get abook and start learning My bolts were way loose but still need a new seal tried tightenem up but still leaks, dont want stripem out.. Mine isnt drippin to heavy but DRIVES me crazy havin a leak!

Hey guys jbtw those pictures arnt mine. But thats more or less the area its all messy at.
So I gave my car a hose down, engine cleaner, blah blah. And its looks like the oil is coming from the Bottom timing belt gasket... so.. I guess just replace the No.1 timing belt cover, gasket? |

No the timing belt cover gasket is just their to keep dirt from entering and contaminating the timing belt, timing chains on the other hand yes but the 5sfe uses a belt not a chain. From what your describing it sounds like it's leaking from the crank seal, depending on how long you plan on keeping the motor or car you should replace the t-belt, water pump, crank seal, cam seal and idler pullies as well better to do it while you have everything apart I recommend OEM Toyota parts.
This is a nice How To on the t-belt replacement on the 5sfe read through it if your confident you can do it yourself you would save a lot of money its a great guide to follow if not don't attempt it you can cause more damage. http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=57712 -------------------- **If you can read this you are too close**
