Hi all, i doubt most of you remember me. I posted on this board many many years ago. I came back seeking advice from a board I respected years ago (and still had a membership with) smile.gif

I am about to buy an older truck to drive around in, occasionally carry small objects, and overall have fun with. I would Love your input as to what I should get.

First, I have about $8000 to blow on a truck. I'd prefer not to spend it all, but that is what I can do if needed.

My thoughts: early 90's toyota pickup with a 22re engine, a 95-97 tacoma with an RZ engine (i do not prefer the later tacoma body styling), or a mid 90's nissan Hardbody with a KA engine. The truck must be a 5 speed, and I think I will go for a single cab, as I think they look better on these early trucks.

Ideally, I would put some 17-18" rims on it, keep it stock 2wd ride height, and eventually turbocharge it to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-220whp. Also, the truck would eventually be painted flat black. I am pretty handy on engine work, and my good friend is the head painter at a local car dealer (in other words, he is my paint guy.) He told me we could have the truck painted for under $500, so that will not be much of an expense.

Here is another kicker, I have a set of 17" black rims, but they are 5 lug (Hardbody is 6 lug). So that makes me look a bit toward the Toyota side.

Thanks, and let me know how you feel. Just pulled 3 random images off google.

Hero

Edit: I think my power goals are more easily attained by the tacoma, though parts are easier and cheaper to find for the Hardbody.

Im pretty sure those HiLux utes (the first one) were sold in the states turbo from the factory. 22R-ET, rare though.

The second HiLux utes you can get in a 4cyl and v6 (at least in aus), the v6 with a couple of wizzers or a blower (which you can buy in bolt on kit form) would be a good laugh.

the only turbo year trucks we had, in the states, were 86 and 87 i believe. RARE as hell too. i've only seen 2 and both were out of state trucks for sale.

Is that early taco or early "pickup"? I drove a 1986 hilux today, pretty interesting. Thing had 380k miles on the original engine, lol.

Found this truck yesterday. If it is under $3k and 200k miles, it will likely come home with me.

nice choice, I want those rims for my 78. lol the only advise I have is be careful buying parts, the 22r block was changed in 1985. Very little pre 85 stuff will interchange. ie 20r head only works on the pre 85 22r. The 22rte manifold is more common than you might think, it is available on some forums and occasionally craigslist. Yotatech had one a few months back.

1985 Toyota Pickup SR5, "Back to the Future"

Notable features: In 1985, nothing was cooler
This is the truck many of us still dream about – the one we were supposed to drive when we got our license. Even if we could have a DeLorean-based time machine, alter the course of history and stop nuclear terrorists, we’d still want to park this black 4x4 in our garage -- freshly waxed by Biff Tannen, of course.

I have heard you can still order RTE manifolds from toyota for a fair price. If that is the case that is the way I will go. I have been out of the game for a long time. Is the AEM UEGO a true wideband O2 sensing system? Seems a good way to keep tabs on things, though I have heard you can run 7 lbs of boost on a 22re and the stock system will be able to keep up with no modifications.

I talked to the guy at the dealer with the truck yesterday. the truck is a 1995 with 200k miles. They were asking $3500 cash. I offered $3000 and told him I would be back today. He said he had another guy likely coming by to buy it that afternoon. Lol, why does every car dealer say this? Hope he sells it.
