Hi everyone, I've been searching the forum for a couple days now and have been trying to hold off from posting something that has already been discussed, but I am at my wit's end here.

I bought my automatic 1.8L 95 Celica last year, and since the day I bought it I've noticed that once it's warmed up it'll begin to idle very roughly, and jiggle it so much that I have to shift into neutral until I'm ready to go. Well, I just dealt with it and had no trouble up until a few weeks ago when my check engine light came on. I found that it was code 71, relating to the EGR system, and with further reading discovered that I could try simply cleaning out the valve with carb choke and see if that fixed the problem.

So I cleaned out the valve (and the lower pipe that connects to the valve) and put it back together and found that I no longer get the crazy jiggling while at stop lights, but my check engine light is still on and I've noticed some odd skipping in the RPMs while slowing down for stops. It seems to jump up to a higher rpm while downshifting, but it's enough to feel it do so while braking. Furthermore I have noticed that my idle when the car is first turned on jumped around a bit. It'll start around 1,200 (which is quite a bit higher than it was before I cleaned it), jump to about 1,800, and back down.

Does anyone know why it would be doing this?

I was wondering if perhaps I need to change the valve modulator... I don't know, I'm fairly knew at this kind of repair work but I'm trying to do as much studying on it as possible.

I'm hoping this is a fix I can do myself, as I can afford parts but not the labor.

Thanks

I'd check your IACV as well. It's possible that this needs cleaned as well. EGR engine code could have been simply masking a larger problem.
