what do you put in your automatic trans differential? Ive always thought you were supposed to use AT fluid dex 3. but my mechanic who rebuilt my tranny said to use gear oil??? not sure which but everything seems to be working fine.

some auto trans. do use atf fluid like the dodge 41te. our trans has a seperate area for the diff. fluid. personally i would use gear oil, but thats just me.

what car are we talking about here. if this is a FWD auto, you use dextron III. if its a RWD with a rear end, you put gear oil in that rear end and ATF in the tranny.

My mechanics had a shop for 25 years I just trusted him. I wonder will gear oil work or should I call him on it. I did get a 12 month 12000 warranty. Although I still hear some gear noise from the diff. at first I thought it was the axle noise again but now it sounds like the Diff. Man I love havin the Celi back up and running!!!!!!!!!

I'm just telling what it says in the big book. I too feel your pain at owning an auto, but I never put gear oil in my diff. Its always been ATF. And because I care...here is the blip outta the A140E Manual.

Automatic transmissions for Toyota uses two types of oils, Dextron iii or ATF type 4. Gear oil is used on Differentials and standard transmissions.

Use what toyota used.
On the dipstick for your gearbox it will have what oil your supposed to use in that box stamped into it. Find whatever that is, job done. -------------------- ST205 Group A Rallye GT-Four, #61 of 77............600hp GT3582r

For the Diff, park level, use a 17mm stubby to get the fill bolt off, the using a tube/funnel combo fill it till she weeps. Or drain, and fill in exact amount. And your diff is going to use the same...didnt I send you that blip?
