Hi Guys,

I have a 1993 (OBD 1) Celica which needs some love, I acquired it for cheap about 3 months ago and have been driving it for about a month since my AE101 was stolen.

Little bits have been done on it recently including a change from Auto to Manual which I did outdoors despite the cold, wet weather here in NZ lately.

The transmission change over went smooth however I have had a recurring pinging noise between 1 - 3k rpm which sounds like spark knock (this was present before the trans change). I am attempting to read the CEL to see if there are any codes stored, however, the light stays solid when I bridge TE1 and E1.

I have tried all sorts of different items to bridge the terminals however the light will not flash, it just stays on. I have never had an issue with getting the CEL to flash on any other toyotas I have had before.

The light doesn't come on during driving, which strikes me as odd due to the trans change and some electronics still not being finished, but that is beside the point, can someone please provide some insight of where to start with the light not flashing?

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Edit: I have tried another cluster gauge I had laying around and checked all the fuses, nothing happening there. On a side note, the Overdrive light flashes when these two are bridged...

IDK man, There is a different PCM for the Manual and for the Auto and I'm not sure whether it is just a matter of having a different sensor running to the computer or what exactly the difference in the two computers is. I've been thinking about this lately because I wonder what adaptions you'd have to make to get the PCM for an Auto to work in a Manual car.

Now, if you study the factory manual with the error codes section you may gain some insight as to what the sensors in each type does.
And what do you mean when you say that some of the electrical is unfinished? Maybe you don't have something grounded.

But if you don't have it already the factory flowcharts are available here:

go to the section that says Tests with codes:

make sure you've got the right motor 1.8/2.2
