Hello. I have done a search but cannot find an answer (sorry if I missed it guys!) As titled - is there a general opinion on what spark plugs are best for the GT4 ST205? I have mild mods such as a slightly better turbo, FMIC, boost controller, exhaust and Walbro 255 (which I understand might be w waste of time without other mods to compliment!). I know what plugs are listed as standard fitment - but should I go for a higher heat rated plugs with the mods I have? If so which heat rating? Is there a plug that has been slightly more approved as the best one for these cars in general?

The reason for asking this is that I have not changed them since my ownership (I have not done that many miles) - I get the car regularly serviced at Toyota and they recommend that the next service I replace the plugs. But they want £80 to replace the plugs so I dont think so! Considering for example I can get a set of NGK ones from ebay etc for about £30.

Or am I just worrying about this too much and should I buy whatever the NGK/etc part finders on their websites tell me to get as the standard fitment?

how much boost?

just get the oem equivalent copper plugs 1 heat range colder and change them every 5000kms, if you have trouble with a misfire close the gap .1mm or so.

irridiums are wank factor and not worth it, platinums are fine for reasonably stock cars that have long service intervals.

I had a feeling that Iridiums were a bit of a gimmick - when I see quotes such as "Reduction of 0.7 seconds in time to accelerate from 20-60mph" - yeah right haha! But they are so cheap from ebay - £35 for a set - is i not just worth getting them anyway? Or is there a disadvantage to it?

I see the NGK Iridium IX come in heat range 6,7,8,9 - I take it the higher the range, the colder the plug...so should I plump for the one in the middle (7/8) such as this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-x-NGK-IRIDIUM-SPAR...8-/290572024916


I have enough boost that I can (too) easily hit the cut (so 1.2 if I am right, but not in all gears?) - so I "limit" myself - but thats an issue for another time! Car gets serviced every 6000 miles, but the spark plugs dont get changed every time! I think Totota tld me every three services should be more than sufficient to change the plugs

Celica 2.0L Petrol
1994 - 1999 (T200) 3S-GTE GT-4 Turbo FR6DPP22U - Bosch Platinum Spark Plug ( +54 )
BKR6EP8 - NGK Platinum Spark Plug (2215)
PK20R8 - Denso Platinum Spark Plug
IK20 - Denso Iridium Power Spark Plug (5304)
VK20 - Denso Iridium Tough Spark Plug (5604)
BKR6EIX - NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug (6418)


Out of choice...NGK, Bosch or Denso? I would normally go for NGK in my other cars. Perhaps I am just being a bit pedantic about the whole thing, it's only a set of plugs I guess!

i'm using NGK now, before i used Denso. don't see any difference. hehehe

could be durability in the long run?

Yeah whatever plug I use will probably do the same thing! Although I am interested in getting the heat rating right, perhaps that will make a difference smile.gif

hey guys, im in the same boat, i need plugs and wires, my car is stock but ill be using an MBC at about 16-17psi, just have an intake and BOV. will BKR7E work? thats what i used in my gen 2 MR2...

i would go with ngk/denso platinum

since they were OE plugs.

am using the bkr7 NGK n it works fine, better than the denso coz it got resistance...in case there is detonation it has less chance of exploding:p for the spark plug wires go get the magnecor kv85...great stuff!

magnecor kv85 competition...been using it for some time and i cant complain at all. fits better than oem 6mm ones. (it is a 8.5 mm.) i felt a difference, and i think its a good stuff specially if u intend to achive a long term goal project like i do:) would like to go above 400hp and the kv85 will help me more in the future. thats my own opinion about magnecor kv85 of course.

Fair enough and I guess they are not much more expensive than stock Genuine Toyota ones anyway...ebay KV85 at about £120 redface.gif

So they are 8.5mm...i am assuming they wont fit in the standard runners and you just have to bin that and let them hang there? What did you do? Have you got a pic?


Anyone else used/recommend KV85? Gimmick or not?

OEM wires are quite adequate for most setups up to and over 400whp generally.
I prefer OEM over aftermaket when it comes to ignition components (except plugs) in 99% of the cases OEM are of better quality IMO.

When I swapped my car, the clip that I got came with Blitz wires, from the research I did, they are no longer made or sold for the 3sgte. I tested them, and they were within stock specs, so I used them, but when it comes time to replace them, I will get a set of OEM wires.
