Hey all I have come to you all for some help the other day my car died as I was driving home.
I did an engine check light and came up with codes 12 and 31, and no spark So off I turn to the internet and done hundreds of searches and nothing really tells me how to fix the problem so I did some problem solving myself. I got a new coil and condenser and pulled off my distrib. when I did this I broke the rotor cap and the black plastic surround under it because they were so brittle. I put all this back in the condenser was ****ed so I thought sweet this will fix it........ cranks over still no spark. I went back the the net and read it could be the ignitor ok cool off to toyota and find out there is only one new in australia and its $500...woow, friend to the rescue I grabbed his out of his camry for a couple of days, im thinking this must be right Better check the codes...... no codes Yes time to start. cranks over STILL NO SPARK what the ****. so I check the codes agai and 31 has gone but still code 12 shows. So here I am back to the internet and my freinds in 6GC land to help me any ideas im over it. I have to go on tour in 3 days and the missus is on my back to fix it so she doesnt have to catch the bus. I have read what the codes mean but I really am looking for someone who has had the same problem and how they fixed it sorry for the long post just trying to give everyone the full picture Thanks Bevan |

well I finished up the timing belt today. while I was there I took off the head redone the gaskit, and cleaned up the valves and piston tops. all seems to be in order and now its back together fired on the first crank. so happy with how it runs now so smooth and quiet. Just has a little puff of black smoke when reved but i havent driven it yet. ive set the timing to 15deg BTDC but I think it needs to be closer to 10. anyone know for sure.
No I have to get the exhaust done as the cat has gone and it has a bad smell from it so after it is done should be sweet |

you can run at 15 BTDC but you might need to run mid grade or premium gas. both the 7A and 5S respond really well to advancing the timing

well It has been a while since I started fixing the problem with the car I guess everyone knows once you start things one problem after another just keeps piling up.
Well after finding the problem with the timing belt I decided while the car was apart that I would give her a freshen up so I..... Removed the head got it rebuilt put new head gaskit and cleaned carbon from piston tops. Put a new oil and water pump on with the timing belt kit and all the seals new altinator and battery new radiator and hosed as well as getting the block flushed New injectors and seals as well as having intake manifold cleaned new distributor coil and condenser as well as spark plugs and leadsI have also changed over all the vacume and fuel hoses in engine bay ( not a pleasent job ) new front CV joints New engine mounts And today I picked her up from the exhaust shop where I got new extractors and a 2.25 inch system with a nice sounding lukey muffler with 3 inch tip The car now drives like its brand new again all to do now is the suspension where I will get a mate at pedders to put on a complete sports lowering kit with shocks springs and all new ball joints tie rod ends and bushes. Wow the last 5 months have been busy and I would like to thank all the members of ^GC for your help and posts that have helped and inspired me cheers Bevan |
