i just got a 96 25 anniversary celica st and love it! i want to add a little bit of hp for as cheap as possible. looking to ebay, i found the cold air intakes, mufflers, headers, and a sensor mod that is supposed to do what a jet chip does that is only like 10 bucks.
i really only want to spend around 300 dollars(i reallize this wont get me much) but what should i do?? does that sensor actually work??? anyway....im turning to this forum for advise. thx storm |

I would personaly save up and get a nice greddy exhaust... look around though, there is a great how to on making a cold air intake, between thoes two you would have probobly some of the most commenly preformed ST mods

Hey, the chip-thing your looking at on e-bay. all it does is pretty much make your car think it has cold air pushing into your engine, weather its cold or not, wich makes you use more gas......its very bad for your motor and injectors....just dont get it... All i did so far is an cold air intake, I got mine from e-bay. I just ordered one for a 92-95 civic worked great and was only 28 bucks for every thing, you cant even make it cheaper then that.

For an ST I would put money in suspension before anything else. Our engines aren't that great for making power. You can get sway bars and a front strut tower bar for about 300 if you shop a bit.

i really dont know like anything about engines, but im not worried about the handling of the car(if that is all that the sway bars do(im really making myself an idiot now:) ) i am just looking for a bit better accelleration.
thx again! storm |

all the way, an ST is not a drag racing machine, but with some springs/shocks/swaybars you can own the corners |

muffler will do basicaly nothing, short ram, once again basicaly nothing, I would seriously not mess with engine if you want kick unless you wana drop some real money on turbo or engine swap... its pretty uneffective I would work on just making her handle well as they said and lookin pretty

An engine swap and turbo is no option, period, for a person that doesn't know that much. Don't bombard a guy with his knowledge with words like "engine swap". No offense to any of you that said that, because we all know that it is the most effective way of making bigger numbers.
Stormtrupr, you really don't have much to work with. I would suggest to save up your money for a while. While you are doing that, I would tell you to come on 6GC.Net as much as possible to learn about your vehicle and possibile modifications that could be done in the future. If you learn enough, you could possibly do an engine swap or a turbo, but you need the knowledge first. We are a warm bunch, so, glad to have ya! But, I would suggest not worrying with it at the moment and instead learn all that you can! |

From what I've read, only an engine swap or a turbo will do any good. A turbo is just as expensive and much more unsafe.. so they're really both out of the question. Do like I'm doing and just make sure it looks kickass all the time.. it's going to be really fun.

thx so much for all the posts everyone..i really appreciate it. despite the lack of performance help....should i go ahead and put on the cai since it is so cheap and a muffler so that it looks better than my stock one....or should i just get a tip? will the muffler make it sound better even though i dont have much hp or just loud and wimpy sounding(dont want a loud putt-putt that proves i have nothing:) ohh...and the civic cai for 28 bucks....does it only require removing the old plastic filter casing???
thx once again storm |

yes , you need to remove the old plastic filter casing to get more space. Easy to do if you have two hand and a minimal skill with tools.
course 101 on mod with the current motors: The first and second is the base modification to do. For the other, you can do it in any orde, depending of your budget. first: Get more air in the motor(CAI(<100$), machining the throttle body(+- 300$)). this modif come more powerfull with other mod Second: Expulse more air with a good velocity... (headers(500$ ?), Cat back, muffler...) Third: tranny. Get a level 1 or 2 clutch. This give Hp, but not torque. Fourth: Pulley, CAM. Give HP. (1000$ ??? ...) Fifth: do a port polishing, change the piston for aluminium one... $$$ six: Install a fuel controler, or a fuel manager.... Seventh: Turbo Some modification need other one to get the power. You should need a fuel manager soon as you get to much power, I think so... Search on ebay if you want to learn about your car, this a good way to teach yourself about cost, faisability, and scrap.... |

Not a cheap ebay muffler, it will sound like a tin can more times than not....i would highly reccomend that you get a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler, which would make a nice deep and smooth exhaust note, but without all the excessive noise of other mufflers.

Heres my order and the order I think you should go in
Rims CAI Other exterior/interior stuff Swap and if you plan on doing the swap, don't waste your money doing stuff to your engine at the start, you'd be better off saving. I just bought the CAI because I couldn't live without it This post has been edited by Andason: Nov 7, 2003 - 9:38 PM -------------------- i am awesome
