Imagine the output shaft from the transmission connected to the top gear. And the drive shaft to the front wheels will be connected to the bottom gear. This custom transfer case would drop the power lower and under the engine with a small drive shaft similar to how the Audi r8 drive shaft. Basically you are transfering power down and under the engine to the front wheel.

You might have to space the engine mounts higher to give you more clearance for the drive shaft. This way your adding to an already well built engine and transmission system versus completely redesigning it.



i decided to help illustrate my idea with some state of the art cnc metal works images:



the red arrow points to where the custom gear transfer case will bolt up. The white thing is the flange that lets you bolt up the front drive shaft.


WOW!!!! that is a GREAT IDEA!!! out of the box yet simple.. cost of a custom box to bolt to the back and drop output to re-direct to the front, though not cheap, has got to be less expensive than some of the alternatives. The only real concern i have about tackling the problem with this approach is how there is so little room under that part of the car.. with the real-estate there being in high demand for room for exhaust components it would defiantly have to be a precise and tight fit. but well worth being an option to investigate.

you can free up some space with a dry sump oil pan.

Known as a drop gear.

Ive seen something similar before, i think it might have been on the peugeot 205 T16 or similar whereby the drives taken from the rear and dropped down before being shunted forward.
The only real issue with doing it is maybe clearance to the ground would be a bit on the tight side, certainly do-able tho.

Maybe look at the drivetrain of the Clio v6 for inspiration? That was formerly a FWD-type setup, turned into MR...

Why not just reverse the motor? Its easy cheap and would fix the transfer issue.
