My tranny started popping out of 3rd and 5th a few weeks ago, and my mechanic said the synchro was bad. Basically, I'm looking at a rebuild, which makes me wonder if I should replace my 176k mile 7A-FE simultaneously. What would I need to get a 3S-GTE into my ST?

In this case you can easily search your answer, but in many cases the search function on this forum is very limited and poor.

I know, and I've found a lot of info about some of the stuff I'd need to do. I am trying to put together a compete list of every little piece I'd have to buy (preferably from someone who has done it themselves) so I can get a cost estimate. Also, how concerned should I be about the legality of the emissions from a Japanese 3SGTE? Even links to other posts that answer my questions would be appreciated! |

Are you wanting to rebuild the 3s that you want to buy, or are you just going to install it?
If you're just going to install it you need to purchase GT engine mounts, wire loom, extra 12/14 gauge wiring, oil,oil filter, coolant, spark plugs, rotor cap, rotor button, spark plug wires....and some electrical/mechanical skills. You could probably get away with a swap for around 3500... If you want to rebuild... You would need to add pistons, rods, bearing, and all needed seals... This would cost you a minimum of 6000... -------------------- |

Do the swap if you can afford it. Keep in mind you'll have to get a transmission as well as Axels to complete it. Everything adds up to a lot ...a lot of money and u will not pass emissions legally. You will have to pay a slum to pass u

well where I live, I drove my 97 ST up with the 3SGTE in and passed with the plug in. so it might just depend on where you are and what they test.
but yeah stickies stickies stickies. one of the first persons to do a write up about the 3S swap did it into an ST. basically ST's have more work because not only do you need parts the GT people need you also need all the GT parts they already have. gl hf dgl Kevin |
