QUOTE (Box @ May 9, 2012 - 1:30 PM) *
I'm 20 and don't need my music cranked to 11, except for when I'm recreating scenes of Stonehenge. tongue.gif Any who, a 10" or 12" should be plenty. Plan on getting a 200-300W sub to match the rest of the system. I don't need overpowering bass, just better presence. Could probably make a box that'll fit in between the rear strut towers flush with the back of the rear seat. Provided you have the liftback anyway.

Present company excluded, Box tongue.gif! I was stereotyping more than anything.

There is one issue you have to consider when making your own box. Every sub is designed with a specific box dimension in mind for optimal sound. They need a certain amount of room inside the box in order to have proper intake of air and create there required air pressure. Not only dimension but most subs are designed for a TYPE of box as well, i.e. Closed, Ported, Bandpass, etc. While obviously the speaker will work in any enclosure, you may be limiting up to 50% of it's sound capacity by using a box its not designed for.

Was thinking about going with a Digital Design subwoofer, just not sure on how I'd want to box it. Should make a separate thread when the time comes I guess.

So as for components, 6.5s will fit in the rear with no modification. For the front I will either need to buy some type of adapter plate, or modify the ring on the old speaker to act as an adapter, right? And the tweeters should be about 1in to fit in the stock location.

You shouldn't have to modify for 6.5" in the front. Should be direct replacement. If you have a GT you can remove the adapter and fit in 8". And 1" should be correct. I still have the stock tweets.

I had 8" subs in the front also and they were pretty good all things considered. But now I have a 12" Infinity w/ a vented box and an SSL amp tongue.gif

Do you guys agree with the idea that upgrading the rear speakers is not worth it? I talked to a few people who basically say that its not worth the cost since the rears don't really add that much to the over all sound, not to mention that no one ever sits back there.

I think I might go with an 8in sub as well.
At first I was looking into the infinity basslink, but after reading the reviews there seems to be a lot of failures with them.

This Dual sub on the other hand seems like a solid little sub, as long as you disable the ricer light show.

Rear speakers matter. If only the front is upgraded, assuming that the replacement speaker is of better quality than OEM, your sound will likely be hollow and not as full as it could possibly be. Best to replace all four.

From my experience, make a budget for a component and go with the best of what you can afford. I take sh!ts more powerful than that Dual sub, I will bet my never-emerging firstborn that it will sound like complete nothing. Invest in quality, it pays back in terms of enjoyment. And I'm cheap. What is important is quality cone construction, durability, and lastly, everything must be powered correctly.

Dual is a cheap, cheap brand; I have had two of their amps and while they never failed on me, it was apparent that you got what you paid for. That setup that you're looking at is dirt cheap, but it seems better to me to put that money towards a quality sub. You can have a 10" for half of that, then invest the rest in a box and amp. A 10" sub won't take up more than 15x15, will run a bit more expensive but you'll have a setup that can run reliably for years, and sound better doing it, than that Dual thing ever will.

Here you go:

http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Reference-1...e/dp/B0028APNZ2

So, having thrown that into the mix, I'll go ahead and say that my 1262w, meaning two more inches of pounding surface, was only eight dollars more.

If you were closer id sell you my setup, Just take your time with it and look online at reviews and quality. I know it's hard when you get excited about something but in this case you'll be glad you did.

I'm very cheap when it comes to mods and I just had pioneer's in the back and some free subs in the front and it sounded great, but also by having subs in the front all the high's came from the back and it was a little weird but didnt sound bad at all. now add more subs and all youll hear is the bass. Just something to think about =)

Yes, Dual makes some REALLY sh!tty subs. But (I'm even laughing inside cause I can't believe I'm saying this), they own a brand called Axxera that are actually pretty damned good quality. They only make receivers right now, not speakers, but I'd keep an eye on them. I really hate to admit that Dual makes something good lol, but it's true. They're up there with some of the best head units right now.

... at least by the reviews I've been hearing. There's another installation shop about a mile down the road from us that sells them. I stop in from time to time to talk. There's shop is more old school and "mom & pop" style ... I like that ... ours is more mainstream. Their shop also won't let you buy junk or sell you junk for that matter, where as mine will sell you whatever you want, though we're going to recommend quality.

I know the dual is low end but it is small in size which is my primary focus.
Maybe I'll look into that single infinity sub and a compact box if I can find one.

Understood on the space issue, but you're putting a box back there anyway...a few inches shouldn't kill you, but putting money down for terrible quality sound and then having to live with it will.

Did I mention that I love my Infinity sub? It's amazing what a properly designed piece of speaker can do.

The only thing thats turning me off from infinity subs is that they seem to have a higher than normal failure rate. Everyone loves their components, but their subs have a lot of negative reviews due to failure. More so than even lower end subs.
