ok, ok.. for real now.. i dont want to here any mess about "just swap to a manual".. i have many reasons for keeping the car an auto.. my car is finally back on the road, and wrapping up phase one of my project. and in preparation for phase four of the project i am starting this thread to investigate the possibility of getting an LSD for the ST Auto trans. seeing as there are SOOOOOO many parts that are shared in the Toyota transitions. i am hoping that one of the many trans series' LSD's will fit in the A246E or perhaps from another trans.. the load will be light(ish) and the cooling system that i am building up for my auto will be perfect for one of the lighter multi-disk type LSD's over one of the more expensive gear type LSD's (like quafes ATB), so i would prefer a multi-disk type.. (if i have a choice)

the car will be turbo'ed DD, and week end Auto-x'er.. so the need for the additional grip will be needed.

has any one worked with this trans or ever tried to mess with it at all? or even had it apart and able t compare internals? any help and constructive input would be greatly appreciated.

Delete the spider gear or weld the axles together. It will no longer be considered a differential though, as both wheels will always spin at the same speed.

oh!! yeah.. lol... was not familiar with that term for locking up the diff..

yeah, i have a feeling that i will be needing to get a spare trans.. crack it open, and take actual measurements and compare to other diff's.. i have my hopes up though, since the axles (and in turn inner splines) are the same as the manual ST trans.. and the manual trans shares parts with the IIRC 1zz/2zz trans (on the clutch side) and seeing those similarities (though will not be able to see until i get the parts side by side.) it is my hopes that the 2zz LSD (option on MR-S) will fit this trans.. and IIRC it is a disk/clutch type LSD.. assuming that all of that is correct and true, then that would be AWESOME!!!!

and again the whole point is that the car will continue to be a weekend auto-x car, and after the turbo, the need for proper traction will defiantly be needed. my goal is just under triple the stock HP.. and other than getting some nice rubber on 8.5inch wide rims.. the need for power/traction to both wheels will be needed..

ty smaay.. was hoping that you would chime in with some more info.. hehe.. but to be fair, (and i know that you have ALOT!!!! of exp with these motors and are always working on yotas of all types) but have you spent much time working on/in the A246E? i know that you are quite busy and most likely would not waist any of your time on this trans since so few of us would actually DO anything with it. but also have seen you do things most of us would consider taxing (like how you so easily tear-down, and rebuild motors) just for the sake of curiosity.. like if any of the ARP hardware you have laying around from motors X,Y, Z fits motor W.. lol

A246E is the ST 5 auto correct? i have never worked on one, i do know that autos and manuals dont have the same types of differentials.

the only ARP hardware thats interchangeable is the 4A-GE flywheel bolts, they work on the the 7A, 1ZZ, 2ZZ, 1MZ, 3MZ, 2GR, and a few others im sure

Just curious, but what are your reasons to want to stay auto? Not trying to question your motives, I'm just simply curious. My other question is can the auto tranny hold triple the stock hp? I'm not trying to sound like a jerk. After experiencing LSD on FWD, I never want another FWD car without it, regardless of hp.

no no no.. its ok.. i appreciate the question, rather than a statement.. naw, first an foremost it has to do with what i want to do, and plan for this car. the goal is to make it a fun DD with good reliability and ability to also run as a weekend AUTO-X'er, and the occasional HPDE track day. I have lived in and around the DC area for most of my adult life (just about top of the list for worst traffic in the USA) , but for the foreseeable future will be in Mobile AL, and be working down town.... second: in the club Auto-Xing that i was doing the courses tended to be tighter and more technical layouts, so the tall first gear was great.. as i would be JUST about to tap rev limit in first, wile most others (both 6 AND 5 speeds) would have to blip into 2nd and then back down into first as they dive into the turn at the end of the few straight we had in the layout. Thirdly, i LOVE the reaction i get when people see my car and see the times im getting, and then seeing the look on their faces when they realize that my car is an auto.. and last i believe that auto's hold power boost better over time (as long as it is kept cool, which i am addressing) an are uneasy about gears syncros etc, in a manual.

as for the last part of your question, IIRC OOBE was one of the only ones on this forum to stay auto wile going turbo, and IIRC (i deff need to re-read his thread again, sometime soon) he reported never having any problems with his auto, even as he was popping pistons....

I like the idea of being a bit more unique even among this great group of car nuts..

250(ish) WHP 7AFE
Auto w/ LSD
DD weekend racer.

IMO this is an attainable goal.
will it end up that way? IDK.. but i have a plan, and will be sticking to it. and what ever the end result will be. i will always be ok with it. because at the end of the day i do ALL of the work on my car (exception to the machiening, since i dont have to tools for it lol, ) i do almost all of the fabrication needed (100% ATM, but may change in the future) and what ever happens, the car will defiantly be way better than stock. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

c52 transmission can't handle much power. that is the manual transmission fitted on st celica's. 200whp is the max hp I'd put on a c52 transmission or any auto st transmission. The c52 transmission handles 90whp in stock form.(so it would be the same as an auto)

is this hear say? or do you have any actual proof? links to threads supporting this statement? personal experience that you could share with us?

and no, in the manor you are speaking with, the C52 would not be the same as the A246E.. auto transmissions are allot more forgiving than their manual counterpart.. an auto trans is essentially a giant hydrolic pump.. and does not go through nearly as much shock loading in year as a manual trans does in a day of regular driving. and the torque converter it-self offers a sort of safety measure, a point of slippage.

Eh, check the AISIN designation for the trans internals and see what else it's mated to. I've seen what looks like nearly the same trans on some larger engines.

I honestly don't know much about the c52 durability. I've heard that the c transmissions on 7th gen celica are not strong once you decide to turbo charge the 1zz/2zz engines. It'd be best to look on newcelica.org or celica tech. Yes your right I don't know anything about the durability of an automatic transmission, I just assumed kindasad.gif

most 7afe that are turboed only reach 200-210hp at the crank, without doing internal engine work.

I know that the C60 is much weaker than the U240E with the 2ZZ-GE engine. The stock U240E holds over 400whp, where as the C60 starts to eat itself at those power levels...even at stock power levels.
