HKS vs. GREADY, Exhaust!!! Options

My muffler is going south on me...the back is starting to rust out and i am just going to spring for a cat back system. now i know gready sp is highly rated among this site but im leary of the sound, i dont want to sound like every other rice burner around my town. I just want a deep tone that backfires allot with out having the "FWAAAP" sound. in other words i dont want it to sound like a civic. Now about the hks system. there is nothing on it under our parts database so what is it all about? Hows it look? and sound? If anyone has any sound bites or pics of eighter exhaust i would really appricate it!!! Thanks for you help guys!

to the best of my knowladge there is no HKS catback for our cars, however i can testify that the greddy doesnt sound rice... its nice and deep

there is an HKS system, but you have to get it from Japan or the UK, the Windmaster exhaust was never available in the US, and HKS USA cannot get it. i have it, it took some minor modifications to fit, the only downside is it is rather pricey, and i got lucky and got a toysport misorder item on ebay so I didn't have to pay out the ass to ship it from japan. here are some pics.

however if someone has an HKS exhaust, usually it means they just bought a HKS muffler.

you can get pretty much any kind of exhaust. By that I mean buy one for an eclipse or an integra something that is similiar to the celica. Then have a shop modify it for you. Best thing to do is go to a VERY VERY VERY VERY small town. They don't charge anywhere as near as big city shops charge. I had my exhaust done in a town called Hospers when my aunt and uncle live an they had to bend the pipe so that it fit under there just like the stock exhaust and it only cost me (get ready for this) $25. No sh*tting either. I got a quote for $100 here in sioux city.

don't buy a system for another car, that's not a good idea just get a muffler and have the shop do an exhaust, or get the greddy.

i do agree with the small town move, tho... good suggestion igotta!

hey thanks allot....i have already dont the muffler idea, thats the one that rusted out on me....i think that im going to get a muffler and have it put on ...like i did before and get the custom piping...Does anyone recomend a type of muffler for our celica?

If you plan on looks (Riceboy) then it doesn't matter what you put on as a muffler. If you want performance then you should get the Greddy SP because it is designed and tested for the Celica. It is not wise to take another exhaust system or any custom piping since you will not get your full potential power.

actually there isn't a big difference in performance when it comes to just putting on a muffler or just buying sp .... at least for our car

I meant that he could buy a WHOLE exhaust system, piping, muffler, etc. And then have a shop bend the pipes so that it fit just like the stock exhaust. And I only said that so he could have more than 1 or 2 (expensive) choices of exhaust.

Oh, and rlan214. I respect ya man but I have to disagree with ya buddy. When I took off my stock exhaust one of my buddies helped me and he is a smoker so I had him blow smoke through the exhaust to see how freely the air moved through it. So he blew really hard and about 5-10 seconds later, a very little amount of smoke finally game out. Then he blew through the new exhaust and it all came out a split second later and it looked free as a bird. Completely unrestricted. Oh, and that was with out the mufflers on too. just the cat and pipes.


Edit: Yea I guess that there isn't a BIG difference is performance not like 100hp or something but there is some.

U want one that backfires a lot? Huh?? The Greddy SP is DEFINITELY NOT rice...don't worry about it sounding like a little civic with a tincan. Oh, as for pics, look in the member rides section, plenty of pics there man.

I have Greddy for my 97 st. It gave me a boost and it's not too loud and obnoxious. It has a nice deep humm to it. It lets people know that you are coming but it won't make them say,"My god, what is that awful roaring sound?"

Just got the Greddy SP installed over the weekend. Did anyone loose low end Torque? I lost a lot of power in the low RPM but I feel the pull in the higher end. Anyone else noticed this?

What about magnaflow? I thought they had a catback for us. Also, loss of low end torque doesn't sound too great, anyone else experience that?

Here's an idea. Make an attachment for the muffler that works something like a throttle body. At low rpm's make it restrict the exhaust flow, thus keeping all low end power. At higher RPM's let it open up and give high end power. I'm sure this has been tried, but if one of you patents this, I'll take you to cort!!!

Don't kno about that loss of low end torque, i havent experienced that....maybe an isolated coincidence?

First, you can use any muffler that can fit.

Customise jobs are not bad unless to expensive. It happens here every day.

In stock form, the car is running lean.

When you change your Air filter, you add more air to the system. Sometime, depending on how the intake is setup, you can lose low end torque since you have less air pressure at low rpm at the throttle.

For the exhaust, the same thing apply, except you call it Back Pressure.

At low rpm, due to vavle over lap, you have less volumetric pressure of good air fuel mixture in the combustion when using a straight throught muffler.

You can increase your A/F ratio to reduce this lost to some point.

Also, you cannot have both worlds unless you do some other stuff. But even then, NA, you will have to make the choice on what you want.
