Hey everyone,
I'm looking at buying my third 6th gen celi, but the only turn off is that it's an auto. It's really nice white with leather and side skirts, but the auto trans is a deal breaker for me. I've heard of people doing trans swaps, I'm just wondering if it is fairly easy? Please let me know what to do. Thanks for any help!!! |

Depends...
There is alot of things to swap out, but it is one of the...easier swaps to accomplish IMO. If you've done a clutch job on your own, I would say you could accomplish this. |

if you are with someone who has done a swap before in any car, you could get it done if that person helped you assuming this is your first time. I also did the auto to manual swap.

Depends... There is alot of things to swap out, but it is one of the...easier swaps to accomplish IMO. If you've done a clutch job on your own, I would say you could accomplish this. i will totally disagree, i would rather do another V6 swap than an auto to manual. you have to ADD so many parts its not even funny, and its stupid expensive. just hold out for a 5 speed. you will find one -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

I personally believe it all matters on the persons knowledge. If this is there first time doing someone pretty mechanical...I would avoid it a lot. I certainly cannot see how dropping a whole engine would be easier then dropping a trannie, crossmember, cables, few switches, plate/clutch, shifting assembly..which is nearly everything, compared to the multiple items including all those for an engine drop/removal. The only part that really sucked was removing the pedals. But, if you have a choice to purchase a manual over an auto...certainly go with manual. I did not say that in my first reply. Then again there is nothing wrong with an automatic. I sit in rush hour traffic in my st204 everyday, and somedays I miss the navity of driving an automatic.

The only part that really sucked was removing the pedals. This cannot be emphasized enough. Terrible workspace, no place for your arms. Wretched. Maybe look at a local junkyard, see if a C52 or S54 is available. Otherwise, I shall let you know how difficult the swap is in due time. I'm at the final stage of gathering parts. cutting out the hole, lifting/maneuvering the tranny etc. it does seem easier on a 6gc than a 7gc though. at least you can reuse the auto axles.
make sure you use the post i put to update the checklist cus there are other small things I listed that were incomplete in previous checklists. I did the swap too so, the older checklists that I used here did not list everything needed because if you don't have a full donor car and you are sourcing out the parts separately, you may miss even just the C-clips for the shifter cables, the ones that hold on the tranny side and the shifter assembly side. small parts will delay your project. You'd be surprised the GT is not that strong either but when you put it on, you'll notice some improvement with the clutch setup. I did it one shot with the 3sgte ST185 lightened flywheel and 3sgte clutch hybrid setup for the S54 but IDK if you have an ST or GT. if stiff clutch is not your idea of a good time, then stick with a stock or OEM-ish feel clutch and stock flywheel so driving would at least be tolerable. If you want performance clutch, then of course thats the consequence of it. -------------------- 94 Celica GT

If it's just transportation, automatic can be ok, but if you actually DRIVE the car, it sucks Two of the cars I have owned (SAAB 900 turbo and Mercedes benz 200) have had automatic transmission, both times I sold them and said "NEVER again!"
