I was burning oil and I had 1500 miles til 3k mark on my oil change. So I was driving car shut down battery light and check engine light simultaneously came on. I pulled to the side and parked. I was able to drive about 5mph home at 3 am no problem. Filled it up with oil hoping no damage was done. I dont know if its rod knock or a spun bearing?? I have a video I can post more if needed. Of course the mechanic trying to screw me didnt even tell me the problem he said new engine. And said 2k I said hell no I could buy a new celica for that much etc. But this is my first car and I love the hell out of it. How much do you think it'd be to repair this. Im willing to do a rebuilt engine. I weighed out the pros and cons. Fixing this car is gonna be cheaper than buying another used car with a whole new set of problems. Plus I have brand new dunlop tires (insult to injury right??) I mean the car is pretty decent my fenders are dented and the paint is looking bad. The car could easily look brand new for 1k of body work I could do in my garage with some plastidip and a day of my friends helping me. So any ways heres the vid tell me what you think.. Thanks in advance it I'm willing to do an engine rebuild if the price is reasonable. (if anyone knows a ballpark number)

Sounds like what happened to my 3000GT. Top of the engine was starved of oil, mine ended up having valves messed up. Does the car still drive fairly normal, or does it sputter and not want to go? If so sounds like top end damage. In which case you could just find a working head online and replace it.

that is rod knock, your crankshaft and the rod needs to be replaced. along with the bearings. a replacement engine should only cost about 500, its the labor that will eat you up. you could rebuild it. then you will have a good fresh engine. but that will cost more than 500 in parts. then there is more labor.

Would almost be tempting to do a V6 swap at this point.

Mechanic jerked me around and was sayind 1k for an engine i laughed in his face. and then he wanted 1k in labor etc. The car still drives when i stop at like a red light the engine shuts down
If I wanted to put 1k in an engine I'd buy an mr2 engine haha This post has been edited by SiriusVirus: Jul 5, 2012 - 3:24 AM |

Afraid Smaay is right then. A 3S-GTE will run a good bit more than 1k.

Rebuild is probably the cheapest way to go. Just need to find a mechanic that won't overcharge you.

Just get a quote from all of them, then research them online and try to find any reviews on the quality of their work. Angie's List, Better Business Bureau, and I think even Google has a reviews section for businesses.

I mean I have 1500 saved from working so far I'm willing for a rebuild. Yep, knock man and bad. I had mine rebuilt about 20k ago and it cost me close to 4K. I also had some performance mod work done too though and a whole new exhaust set up but I think the actual rebuilt with the kit was about $2500 You might be able to just do a long block for about $800 and then swap yours out for the new long block. Then just add on all the accessories again. That'd prolly run close to 2K. This post has been edited by 6G96GT: Jul 12, 2012 - 9:19 PM |
