They are recognizing a loss they had with the newer Celica's and deciding instead of trying and getting some of that market back, they want to concentrate on what they do best with the actual Toyota line and that's build reliable cars. The Lexus name is Toyota's showcase of performance. But, as we all read in the post about the Celica leaving, a new car will replace it. I'm guessing something performance oriented.

I thought Toyota was getting ready for the release of the new supra around the same time...or am i just misinformed? I recall seeing an article that said the next Supra will be in the same market as the 350z, no expensive tt setups...just alot of power from a good engine. The reason being to place it in the same "affordable yet powerfull" market.

of course i could just be talking out of my booty and am on crack or something...you never know... =)

basically this is whats going on from a R&D standpoint:

sport compacts and sports cars are really big right now. Toyota has basically concided on that era and focusing on the next big thing, hybrid and fuelcell high gas-milage vehicles, which is unfortunatly the inevitable direction the auto market is going to take.

its like comparing this: before this sports car era, we had the SUV boom, before that was the stationwagon boom, and following the SUV boom was the short-lived crossover vehicle boom. these were very small eras in the evolution of vehicles.

Toyota is focusing on hybrid and fuelcell vehicles because that transformation can be more closely compared to the carborated to fuel injection transformation rather then the switching between popular vehicles of the time. instead of focusing on a certain market that is in a temporary high, they noticed that global economy isnt looking highly on oil dependant fuel. so they are looking to be one of the front runners for the mainstream advancement of automotives into fuel cells. the only thing that would crush this is if bush were to be a complete hypocrit and go ahead and claim iraqi oil fields as US property. but theres no way gv't would let that happen, the hupla following that kind of thing would be absolute pandamonium. That can be compared to how the Rotary motor, which was supposed to revolutionize engine technology, hit a brick wall when the energy crisis happened. This would be the exact opposite of that, instead of being in a crisis we would be back to normal, gas prices would fall, and the need for fuelcell vehicles would drop, and the high efficiency projects would dissappear.

Are you guys talking about U.S. or the world because I heard celicas are still going to be made in Japan....

And you know there is a G35X which is an AWD version of the G35 and it seems that every year the g35 is looking more like a skyline...from the 6 speed to the AWD....

When I checked up some japanese magazines a while ago, toyota was rumored to be making a supercar and the concept drawying was called gt5000 or gt4000 something like that but it had supra written all over it. Supposedly if it comes out in the U.S. its going to be produced under Lexus, but its just another rumor.

Also, do not forget the infamous Camry Solara which will be a performance car maybe close in competition with the Z's and probably closer to the RX-8. The solara doesn't have much hype it seems but it is a sporty car.

Also, have you guys forgotten that the 3SGTE engine is still around and it still has the AWD....if you look at the japanese toyota site....
Well its basically just a newer matrix/caldina but its pretty tight..ST246
Click Here you will see engine specs for a GT4 caldina and you can click for photos. The GT4's have auto tranny but its supposed to have 6 speed soon.
2005 GT4 engine specs and photos

Plus the 7th gen celica is winning so many races like the japanese GT300 and GT500 championships....Thats a performance monster to be awaken right there.(hint maybe a newer celica but with a new name...hehe)

What I think sucks about TOYOTA is that they used to make great FR cars that were high revving....AE86 baby....thats what they should start bringing back even though there AWD performance is great.....But interestingly enough....toyota has made a lot of wagoned/hatchbacked cars...like the WILL VS and Altis and those are pretty cool for hatchbacks.

You guys also forget there is a semi/sport car...more of a fun sports car MR Spyder..

Anyways for me....I have faith in the ALMIGHTY Toyota. If they get into a phase of performanceless cars, I am pretty sure they will jump right back into making supras that will beat nissan, mitsu, and even hondas....

http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/news/03/index.html

lemme know if you see anything in there that partains to a sports car... cuz i sure dont besides their motorsports release for 03
http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/news/03/0225.html
i found this quote kinda cool
"3.All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship Series (JGTC)
Toyota will support teams taking part in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship Series (JGTC), through Toyota Technocraft Co., Ltd. TRD. (TRD)
Participating cars models will be the Supra (GT500 class), powered by a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine (3UZ-FE), and the MR-S and Celica (GT300 class), powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-charged engine (3S-GTE).
The new 5.2-liter V8, based on the 4.3-liter V8 engine (3UZ-FE) available on the Celsior and other commercially sold models, was developed in pursuit of creating an engine of high performance, yet light, compact and with a low center of gravity."

other than that though its all emissions and fuel cell/hybrids.
