So I am up to 301,000 miles on my engine(95 5sfe) and I've been dealing with the engine light coming on and going off when it pleases. Usually comes on when it's hot outside anything above 80 degrees and then usually goes off at night when the sun isn't shining and it's a little cooler outside. No rough idle, and it only back fires when I hit around 95mph(which is only when I'm on I95 going to a party in DC biggrin.gif) What could this possibly be? And what should I start replacing, now that I am over 300,000 miles?

Youre going to need to check the code while the light is on to figure out the problem. Mine comes on and off intermittenly because of a bad valve so it could be almost anything.

No

See it was on today and then on my way home it went off, so now I can't check it. But I got my paper clip ready.

7 flashes 1 pause. Advanced Auto said they couldn't give information on the codes, and that I should google it.

That'd be your throttle position sensor.

And that would cause the engine light to come on and off when it pleases? Have you seen this before?

If it's on its way out. Maybe it just needs cleaning.

whether it goes on and off or just stays on, it can be faulty, either with the wiring or the actual part. but anything engine sensor related, will make the engine check light come on. If you have A/T, O/D on your cluster serves as the diagnostic blinker. the rest of the lights are oil, battery, air bag, or whatsover.

It's not the TPS, because in our Haynes repair book 7 Flashes, Pause, 1 Flash Code 71 is EGR. It may just be the hoses, which I got replacement ones for but I broke of one of the vacuum modulator stems so I'm going to have to get one of those first and then replace the hoses. Then maybe the EGR valve and/or EGR gas temp sensor. frown.gif

Ah, earlier you just said 7 flashes and pause. In that case EGR would be correct. Should be a EGR/vacuum diagram on the hood, check out everything.

That's ok, at least you know where to start looking. Sadly OBD1 is very vague with just saying "EGR System".

I am having the exact same issue at the moment also. It's odd cause at night it runs perfectly then the Texas heat hits and it runs like crap. Going to check all my lines later tonight and make sure everything is connected.

So you can definitely see where two of them would need to replaced.

Is this one part of the EGR system too?

New Vacuum Modulator.
