i WAS WONDERING IF YOU GUYS COULD HELP ME OUT, I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO GET SOME GOOD HP GAINS IN MY CELICA, BUT EVERY TIME I LOOK INTO AN OPTION IF FIND IT IS NOT SMOG LEGAL, I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE COULD THROW ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, I WAS THINKING OF SWAPPING MY ST ENGINE OUT FOR A GT REBUILDING IT WITH ALL NEW INTERNALS AND TURBOING IT, OR I WAS THINKING THAT MAYBE I COULD GET MY HANDS ON A USDM ALL TRAC ENGINE, OR DO YOU GUYS THINK IT WOULD BE BETTER TO JUST UPGRADE THE INTERNALS IN MY ST AND TRY AND TURBO IT, WHICH WOULD BE MOST COST EFFICIENT AND WHICH SETUP WOULD NOT CRAP OUT ON ME THE FASTEST.

YOU HAVE VARIOUS OPTIONS... YOU CAN START HERE:

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1448

AND READ INFO ON TURBOING A GT HERE:

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=5574

SINCE YOU HAVE A ST, THE SECOND LINK WILL ONLY BE REFERENCE MATERIAL. YOU CAN APPLY THE CONCEPTS TO YOUR ST. THERE ARE A COUPLE PEOPLE HERE WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TURBO'D THEIR ST, BUT I'M NOT TO SURE HOW'S IT'S HOLDING UP SO FAR. HOPEFULLY, THEY'LL RESPOND TO THIS THREAD.

If you're not looking for a lot of power you could start off with intake or exhaust. Look in the parts database or do a search. Why wouldn't performance upgrades be smog legal in NC? I know California is strict as hell but I thought that was the extent of it. If I remember correctly, here in MD, they don't even open your hood to do emission testing.

Yeah, here in Cali they are real strict about emisions.

Yet there is a way to get arround it. The state of california has no problem with doing a swap on your car, just as long as the motor you are swaping it with is newer than the car. Since i have a 94 celica, i would be able to swap any motor into it from any car 94 or up.

If i wanted to do the 3SGTE swap and legalize it, i would have to go with a 95 MR2 3SGTE (US spec), swap the motor, and then go to court or which ever place it is that you take it to legalize it. There you show them proof that the engine is from a newer car than yours. They fill the paper work out, and you now have a 94 celica FWD Turbo charged car. STREET LEAGAL

I think that's how it works, but if i'm wrong, then someone please correct me.

I think the swap is the best option but where is the best place to find a usdm 3sgte, most of the places i have called only deal with the imported engines.

I already have all the little stuff done to my st intake exhaust, chip, venom control module, headers, denso sparkplugs, wires, but i want to get something that will make it move. I have read all the post before about the swaps but the only thing i can see that will be smog legal is the usdm 3sgte, if you turbo an st will that pass smog?

i would say to first find out EXACTLY how strict they are where you live. Find out if what i posted earlier can be done there too. If that isn't an option in your state, then you might as well just get a JDM motor.
