get a set of these feeler gauges. Im not sure where to find the min/max for the clearances tho

No those feeler gauges probably wont work. I needed the ones specifically for valves on my 5S. If you use that other set you have to seperate the feeler gauges and you may accidently drop one in the engine and spend the next two days removing the oil pan to retrieve it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have feeler gauges but no Toyota Repair Manual. I'll be needing step by step instructions as well as some photos outlining the process.

Those might not work. These are the feeler gauges you use for valve shims.

on a 1ZZ the straights work just fine. its really easy to check clearances on a 1ZZ. the 2ZZ is another story
