I was replacing my PCV valve this afternoon, and had a bit of difficulty getting it out...

Now two things:
1) The new one doesn't fit - the hole is much bigger than the valve. I'd assume this is the mysterious grommet?
2) There's a bit of the old whatever stuck in there. I tried to fish it out to no avail. I'm not too concerned, everything I've seen shows only two very small holes that go from there the PCV valve goes to the rest of the valve cover, unless someone here knows the 5SFE in the Celica is different...

Here's a picture of the old PCV Valve:

1. The grommet is not mysterious ... it is necessary in order for the new valve to fit. You gotta expect, if this is first time it's been replaced in who knows how many miles, the rubber turns hard and brittle. Rubber is a natural compound and eventually breaks down and the heat from the engine bay fast tracks this.

2. Try really hard to get it out. It's not a HUGE deal, but it's better if you do.

The grommet on my daughter's car crumbled in pieces when I tried to change it. A shop vac and some long needle nose pliers will be all that you need. The vac will grab the small chunks, and it will pull the larger bits close enough that you can grab them with the pliers. You can get the grommet at Autozone or whatever's closest to you. Hope this helps.

Yea. Don't worry about it. What I did was took off my valve cover and flipped it over and fished it out. Once it got close enough to where I have grab it with pliers. I used the pliers to pull it out. AutoZone has a rubber grommet that's a universal fit. I too have a 5SFE and the universal fitted along with the new PCV valve I purchased from AutoZone. Don't sweat it though. It's nothing really major.

If anything from the grommet broke apart and fell, if its small it shouldn't be a problem. Even if its big it gets stuck in the extra layer of metal where the crankcase breather is. Of course I recommend getting it out. By removing cover or like mentioned above wtvr works. On your new one put the grommet on first then the PVC you'll have a hard time putting it in together at the same time
