All 6g celica engines are non interference motors so the valves cannot get bent on the pistons if the timing belt does indeed break.

It sounds like you said the engine doesnt turn over, do you think the motor may be seized or do you suspect the starter?

Starter doesn't engage, just spins.
Lights & radio were working.

Going 60, it sputtered once, quit.
Tried to restart, starter just spins without engaging the flywheel.
Im in the WTF mode!! mad.gif

Timing belt, pry back the cover and look or check the distributor to see if it's turning. If the crank pulley turns but the distributor does not, you know it's a timing belt. Only takes a friend and about 15 minutes to check that.

Belts will be checked & so will fuel pump & probably filter.
But why won't the srarter engage the flywheel, or does the motor rotate THAT easy??
Why would it just quit for no apparent reason other than timing belt if that's not the prob??

Yea, with no valves moving to create compression the engine spins very freely. WEEWEEWEEWEEWEE. You can probably turn the crank by hand without any tools if the belts were off.

Hear how it cranks?

Hurry up and fix it before the spring meet!

I don't have a volt//multi meter.
I'll put it on my list.
Meanwhile, my bud at the shop will give it the " Once over " anyway.
Thanks for the tips guys!!

Sounds like the coil. Mine just went on me recently. Car was running and then it sounded like a stalled it. Then it wouldn't restart. I had fuel, air, and compression so it had to be spark. In the end, it was the coil

If it were just the ignition coil the engine would still crank with compression, not freely as he's describing.

I agree with you Jordan.

Rob, I had a buddy that had a timing belt snap just getting off the highway in his 5s camry. I'd put my $$ with Bitter on this one. Not bad, it can be done in an hour or so. The sucky part is lining up the timing marks, but even that's not too bad....

It's a great time to replace the oil pump seals as well, they leak like a crazy bitch once they let go and you have to take all your **** apart again to replace them. Same for the water pump...and while the cooling system is drained hoses and thermostat too!

And cam seal.
And distributor shaft seal, wrong end of the engine but it's probably leaking too. Cap and rotor while you're at it.

actually, just drop a 1MZ in there. **** that 5S.

Sorry I can't post a video.
Here's where Im at so far--
I believe its the timing belt--no compression when tried to restart, no fluid leaks at all.
Had the car 7 yrs & only things done besides tune up & oil changes--
Alternator, radiator, lower rad hose, thermostat, fenders, front bumper cover, passenger side hi-beam, sylvania bulbs. Its at the shop waiting its turn.
Did some searching & with the tips here, will be doing seals & water pump.
Sooo--do the timing belt & tensioners & gaskets come in kits or is everything separately purchased?
I have to go to the shop first thing Monday morning & discuss this with the mechanic.
He has never done anything like this before. I have no time nor all the tools to do it.
I leave for work at 4:15 AM & get home around 7PM.
I know you folks are eager to help-- Words cannot express my humble & heart-felt thanks!!
