"Tornado Air System" (As Seen on TV)? It's "designed to enhance fuel economy and increase power. Increases gas mileage up to 24%." I just saw it in a Pep Boys ad and was wondering if it does what it says. Does anyone have it or knows of it?

Yeah, I noticed some people already spoke of this a while ago but does anyone have any new insight? Thanks.

I think if it only cost about 15-20 dollers, it would be a deal. but it's FAR too much.

It yields gains but are very minimal. Gas economy MAY increase, but performance-wise it's not worth the flimsy aluminum thingy.

Sorry guys, but I have to raise the bull**** flag on this one.

The effect they claim to generate (swirl in the airstream leading to better atomization and flame propigation) with the little fins and stuff could potentially do something if said effect had any chance of reaching the injectors or the combustion chamber. The fact is, it doesn't. On our cars for instance, if you place the 'tornado' in the tube leading to the throttle body (I dunno if thats where it goes, but it has to go somewhere upstream of the manifold so we'll give them the benefit of the doubt). As the air comes in to the tube it speeds up and goes past the 'tornado'. The 'tornado' makes it swirl (but also causes a slight flow restriction while doing so). The swirling air then goes the rest of the way up the tube and ot the throttle body. Now it has to go past the throttle butterfly, which might not be fully open, casing the flow to change dramatically. The swirl is probably all gone by this point, but we'll keep going just in case. Now the air enters the plenum. A plenum is designed to be a large volume 'box' that is supposed to smooth the air entering the intake runners and reduce any pressure pulses coming up the intake runners to nothing. It does this because it basically negates the flow charactersitics, slows the air down, then allows it to smoothly enter the transition area into the port. Then it goes down the port, past the fuel injector where all the 'mixing' of fuel and air begins. There is no way any 'swirl' that happened clear out past the throttle body is going to make it this far, therefore, there is no positive effect. The only effect it has is the flow restriction it causes in the intake tract.

Sorry to rant, but this is one of the all time worst automotive aftermarket products when it comes to false claims. 24% increase in fuel mileage? Give me a break.

Don't waste your money.

I second that, I don't know if those are actual results from a specific car, that for some reason yielded those kind of gains, but, I couldn't imagine it producing 24% more on any car. I think it's shady, and ****ing retarded

This sounds almost like those fake turbo kits that everyone is trying to sell. Load o' crap! If it is a fan that goes into your intake tube it can actually decrease performance b/c it cant spin fast enough @ high rpms and blocks air, like oobe said. I haven't seen what one looks like, but from what i gather it just isnt worth putting on your car. I agree w/ u guys.

i have one and it works GREAT!!! biggrin.gif I use to get around 320mi between fillups, now i get around 390!! not really.... just a general rule, anything advertised in an infomercial is crap.

They are very flimsy and thin. Really really, it looks like it was made out of the bottom of a soda can...that's how delicate it looks :s

It would be easy to fabricate a 'test' where you didn't change a thing and ended up with 24% better gas mileage. Our spec miata which is really very stock, gets about 11mpg on the race track...sometimes as good as 12. On a long highway trip driving like a grandma and drafting off every honkin SUV you can, I guarantee I could get 35mpg with the same car. Thats like a 300% increase....so its not going to be very difficult to make up a 24% 'increase'. Measuring gas mileage is so impercise anyway.

Really going to disagree with you on that comment... Hyperground wires ( the real kit, not imitation ) was prolly the best 120$ I ever spent... hooked em up on my G/F's supercharged civic and noticed a huge difference in the way it ran.

as for the tornado.. I picked on up a while back on an impulse when I took my celica upto JCwhitney when I still was running my 5sfe. At that time I had an injen short air intake also hooked up among other things and I did notice a differnce with it installed, but not a 24% increase or anything like that.

You guys will have to keep in mind that this product was designed for carburated vehicles originally on which it make alot more sense to use a product like this, Using it on fuel injected cars came as kind of an afterthought, and obviously wont work as well.

You can have something like this machined that will work alot better.. basically get a throttle body gasket from a local autoparts store for the motor type you have and take that gasket to a machine shop and have them make a spaceer to go between your throttle body and your intake manifold that is between 1.5-2 inches and have them swirl the inside of it. this will give the airflow a sprial to it right before the runners in the intake manifold and will not impeed airflow - this is a trick done on alot of cars and is pretty inexpensive to do with fairly good gains 5-7HP.. places like summit and other part places sell premades of these for alot of cars

Sorry to be a bltch, but as someone that spends at least one day a month at the dyno for something....there is no way. 5-7hp? No way. You're missing the entire point of a plenum....it negates any flow characteristics caused upstream of it. You MAY see some kind of gain by having a 'swirl' pattern machined into the surfaces of the intake runners, but anything before that will not make any difference.
