Gotta figure out a different plan. I can run Torque Pro on my Kindle Fire but I can't get it directly from the Amazon App Store. Most guys that run it on their Kindles bought it on their Android phones then emailed it to themselves and opened it on the Kindle. The second obstacle is that the Fire is not equipped with Bluetooth. I considered getting an ELM327 to USB, then USB to micro USB adapter. Could work as long as I find an app to work with the signal being plugged in, and I forgot to check to see if micro USB Bluetooth adapters are available. More research when I get home...

I hate to burst your bubble, but this isn't OBDII at all. Not even partially.
You're just monitoring the ECU inputs/outputs. You can do this with my 86 Cressida, or any car with an ECU. JDM ECUs are OBDI. Even a brand new 2013 car is still OBDI. OBDII is a completely different diagnostic system than OBDI. They're not compatible, and not translatable. OBDII is governed by US law with specific requirements that are different from OBDI. The codes are different, what the ECU looks for is different, the outputs are different, ect. You will never be able to hook up an OBDII code reader to an OBDI ECU and have it work. Plain and simple. Just to clarify; I'm not trying to be a jerk, it's a pretty cool idea and it's great to be able to see what's going on.
I wanted to clear up the obvious confusion about OBDII. -------------------- |

I thought I made that clear in the opening post about this not enabling you to pass emmissions or whatever. But thanks for the clarification! -------------------- |

It's not just not passing emissions, it's not OBDII at all.

Not trying to be apart of this debate.... but i always thought and have read somewhere that 1996 obd-ii was mandate in us.. in europe they switch over to obd-ii in 1999 but it uses a different protocol that why it was called EOBD2... in 1998 some company in japan switch over to over obd-II... all different foreign region have there own set of protocol they dont U.S. standrads. So Japan JDM was just know as JOBD.
JOBD is a version of OBD-II for vehicles sold in Japan. They all have different codes... |
