Hi all,
The other day I installed a new radiator only to find out my water pump went out when the car over heated. This turned out to only be the hose from the pump to the block being busted but I went ahead and changed the pump anyways since mine was old and I was already in there. During this process I found the new pump didn't bolt up, so I went back to advanced and found I have a 1.6 liter not the 7afe like I thought. So I called the lot I bought it from and asked what they pulled the motor from (when I bought they'd mentioned a swap but I assumed it was from another celica) and they said it came from a 94-95 corolla. So I have a few questions, 1) what engine do I have? 2)what transmission and 3)what can I do to said engine to increase performance? I don't need a race car but I do want to keep up with maybe some stock v8s, if that's not possible at least be able to take the local tuner guys (mostly honda guys). any info on the drivetrain would be greatly appreciated!

1.6 liter? I wander what engine that was. If you have the st chasis then you're best swap choice would be the 4age.

Ok. You want a 1.6 to keep up with a stock v8? Hmmmm.

Aint gonna happen kid. You want more power to beat honda kids. Get rid of that engine. Swap. There are plenty of choices. You decide, after some serious reading...

If you have a 1.6 instead of a 1.8 then it would be a 4A-FE. Are you positive it's a 1.6? As far as the transmission it's probably the stock trans. I doubt if whoever did the swap did anything else besides blow the old motor and drop the cheapest one they could find in. As far as keeping up with V8's or even Hondas, for that matter, I'm sorry to say but the other guys are right. Short of an engine swap our cars simply can't keep up with anything. The 5S has decent torque but all in all, our cars are pretty slow.

I second the 4afe. It's very similar to the 7afe just... smaller. You likely have your stock transmission. You likely still have the original wiring, sensors and manifolds that came with the car on the 7afe.

Stock V8's? Keeping up? In an actual acceleration contest?

+1, sad to say but our cars will only keep up with high hp if you put tons of work/time/money into it. What I've always dreamed of building was a 5sgte. Lol. It's been done before. But very few I believe.

Yeah I'm sure it's a 1.6, I had to take my water pump back because a 7afe pump wouldn't fit but the 1.6 did. And as far as the slow thing goes that sucks lol, celicas have always looked fast to me but I guess that's what happens when you judge a book by its cover
