So I just got a 1994 celica gts, I've owned a 5gen before and had a lot of fun with it, so I chose to buy another celica, drove an hour or two away and picked me up a nice green gts, it needs some minor bodywork and some engine work but I don't really care as its not my dd, after bringing it home and putting a new distributor, plugs, wires, timing belt and water pump it has been running good (it has 215xxxkm on it) I've noticed when I'm off the throttle there seems to be what I think is valvetrain noise... Anybody heard of this? Also I'm getting some blue smoke upon start up.... Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I also have a 3rd gear synchro problem which I hear is common but I've came up with a way to shift that doesn't grind!

Thanks from ontario Canada!!

The 5S is known to shoot a puff of smoke on startup. If I recall correctly, it's the valve seals. I wouldn't worry too much about it, depending on how much it smokes when you start it up. The 3rd gear syncro issue is pretty common, and some Pennzoil Syncromesh in the transmission seems to be a decent cure 9 times out of 10.

bucket and shim system for valve clearance, have it checked and adjusted.... if you have to much of a gap on any of the cam lobes to the shim the valves can get quite noisy.

if you don't got a head gasket problem, you will smoke at startup, (valve seals) i puff puff pass all the time.
