Wellp ironically I was driving to my college to apply for my classes today and I decided to take some mechanic classes. Anyways while driving my car just lost all power. I tried to start the car and all I heard was the starter trying to start the engine and I heard the fuel pump engage as well. I get my car towed home in my garage pop the hood my intake stank of raw fuel as well did the spark plugs. Right off the bat I'm going to assume its the ignition coil since it probably hasnt been changed ever considering my cars sketchy past. Only proof of work done I got with it was a timing belt being done. The coil is only 35$ at Oreillys Im just stuck at home waiting for a ride with my friend when he gets off work.

Ive read numerous threads on here today that have sounded EXACTLY like what happened to me today so I'm dead set on the ignition coil as my first move.

One level headed the other well filled with panic like I was before using search lol

Anyways does anyone have any other theories just in case this doesn't solve my problem?

Take off the distributor cap and make sure there isn't spaghetti in it. If that checks out I'd look into the coil.

Pull the spark plugs and twist up some paper towels to shove in and absorb any fuel sitting on top of the pistons. Let it sit overnight with the plugs out to evaporate.

Once you get all the excess fuel out we'll know. If the car is turning over incredibly slow, then perhaps the starter. If it still turns over normally it's something else.

That being the case the starter is fine then. If it's noticeably faster than what it used to be that sounds like a loss of compression.

I say just let the fuel evaporate overnight and try it again later.

if its cranking overly fast you may have snapped your timing belt, if the valves are open there's no compression and the crank will free spin. It would also explain why you got a fireball through the intake, the intake valve is open and the stroke pushed the gas up through the intake as it ignited. take the top couple of bolts to the top timing cover off and pull it away from the head. if the belt is off it will be immediately apparent

two things will make it sound like that, snapped timing belt or bad bendix drive in the starter..... look at the crank pulley while someone hits the ignition if it spins you need a timing belt. if it doesn't you need a starter

I'm going to throw my vote in for timing. If it were a 5-speed you could test to see if it's the starter or not. Would be easier to check timing than to remove the starter to have it tested.

Chicago has been absolute garbage weather raining nonstop. Just about everyone seems to think its the bendix drive mechanic friends just based off the sound say it because theyve expeirienced the problem. They didnt even consider timing belt until I shot the question if that could be it. But I mean I think I have less than 20k on the belt I dont have the paper work that came with my car when I bought it but I know it got changed before I bought the car.

It takes like 10 minutes to check the belt though. The starter going out wouldn't cause the car to die while driving, which was the initial problem.

box is right... bendix drive won't stop a running engine
it can be easily ruled out though, have a friend turn the ignition while you look under the hood at the crank pulley, if the crank pulley spins your bendix drive is engaging fine and you need to check your timing belt. if it doesn't spin then your starter isn't engaging the flywheel and needs to be replaced.

from the above comments about the motor dying while driving, and the fireball while trying to start the car I would bet money on the timing belt
