So the entire belt is staying in place except for the cam wheel. Passenger side motor mount is taken out and a jack is holding it up just like in the sticky guide. No covers are put on yet its just open belt waiting to be put back together. crank pulley on as well for the one guide ring. Have to wait til tomorrow night to do more work any suggestions as to why its sliding off the cam? Its pretty damn tight. Still cranking and no start. My friend is coming back tomorrow night with a compression gauge. And we are gonna take it all apart again and make sure we are at TDC for sure.

what engine?
look at the keyway on the crankshaft for the pulley. with that key at 12 oclock, thats TDC. then line up the hole in the cam gear with the mark on the rear cover. -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

i have the 5sfe engine. we found tdc using a long screw driver. we are going to take it apart again i realize losing tdc will cause an engine not to start but would that cause it to walk off the cam gear? im using a new spring that came in my gates timing belt kit the old one looked pretty rough.

no that shouldnt allow it to walk off. did you install the little tab down at the crank pulley gear that keeps the belt in place?

update. cam gear lined up with u notch, crank and tdc compression ignition rotor timed at spark plug 1, timing belt on. alternator hooked intobattery not belted yet. back to my original problem we have compression spark and fuel just wont start. shot fire out of the throttle body again. i just dont get it...

If you're sure you have all those most likely you dont have the timing belt set correctly. How do you know you have fuel and spark? Shooting fire may be a product of the intake valve still being open while and ignition is trying to occur.

Ive been screwing with this for 2 weeks now. Spark plugs sparking, and the stench of raw fuel.

The guy on toyota nation literally did everything I did and we are both having the same problem. He fixed his problem with a new cap and rotor which I'm considering doing now. the inside of the cap looks scraped up and rotor is slightly bent. My friend who graduated from mechanic school and now works in a shop is even stumped by this we've worked on my car the past 2 nights in a row following the timing belt sticky completely. We didnt follow it completely the first time around so we started from scratch tonight and did everything by the post. Back to damn square one. I mean my timing belt looked like garbage and needed to be changed regardless.. Like it really sounded like it wanted to start but just wouldnt go. Which brings me back to the camry guy on toyota nation where the only similarity that I can see causing this was messing with the distributor and royally screwing up the timing. my rotor is on spark plug one all the basic trouble shooting has been gone through. are the dots lined up properly on the gears for the intake and exhaust cams. Did you install the service bolt in the cam if you removed them?

. Otherwise, you car will either not idle properly or more likely will not run at all. In this case, you'll need to rotate the crankshaft pulley 2 revolutions clockwise and back to the 0 degree mark. Make sure again it's at ± 0.5 degree tolerance. Recheck the hole on the camshaft timing pulley and see if it's aligned with the u-notch on the head. More likely it isn't which is why it isn't running normally. If it isn't, then we'll have to readjust it so that it is. So remove the negative terminal on the battery, put the tensioner pulley back in 'loose' and remove the timing belt from the camshaft timing pulley and make the necessary 1 or 2 tooth adjustments to bring the hole back in alignment with the u-notch. Put the tensioner pulley back in 'normal operation' mode, reconnect the negative terminal on the battery, and start it again.
Repeat this step again and again until the timing belt is correctly positioned and until the car idles normal. If you're lucky you could get it right the 1st time but for me, this took about 3 times before i got it down right to the right timing since my crankshaft turned while the timing belt was off so I had to narrow it back down to the right position. I didnt remove them. all that was done was lining up the notch on the cam gear (all that i did to the cam gear) in the sticky the guy says something about 2 full rotations on the crank can anyone go into better detail about that? Took apart throttle body and discovered all injectors were flooding. Possibly my fuel pressure regulator? Causing my car to flood out and not start? Because I dont think my timing could be so far off that I cant even start the damn thing even if I was off timed it wouldnt be that bad. Its basically like my original problem is still back and my mechanic didnt look any further than just seeing a worn out timing belt and instantly assuming that to be it.

Being it's all of the injectors I'd be led to think the FPR is responsible.

Because even though the timing belt looked chewed up and needed to be replaced it wasnt the problem nor a solution. Because I mean I find it hard to believe all 4 injectors failing on me at once and not being a more catastrophic stall then what I had. My one friend who took a more diagnostic approach came up with this. I'm hopeful. Then I still have to play with the timing belt.

One tooth can cause a vehicle not to start depending on the vehicle. Two teeth most likely no cars will start.

I mean I've done it 5 times each time starting from the begining of a guide. I feel like the timing belt never actually slipped time it just looked bad thats my theory.. But can a timing belt issue cause all 4 injectors to stay open?

Timing belt was a true nightmare. BUT MY BABY LIVES AGAIN! I just need to replace my spark plugs I have a pretty bad misfire they are black from being fuel fouled so long, also do an oil change before I even think of actually driving it. But I dont even care right now I'm beyond happy. :')
I've never experienced a misfire before. But my friends timing light showed I was hitting TDC correctly. I'm not throwing any codes but I have a horrible misfire where the whole engine is bouncing pretty hard. I revved her a little bit and the car stalled (of course after I did my oil change) Timing light read correct after I played with the dizzy so is it safe to assume my problem is spark plugs because I pulled spark plug 4 and the damn thing was SOAKED with gas and black.
